Blog Entry 6 of 8 Where In The World Are The Castle Rock Democrats?
My name is Debbie Hill, and I am the District Captain for the Castle Rock Democrats. My blog is about the goings on of the Democrats in the District (which contains about 53,000 people)....our community service projects, our work on legislation and candidates, and how we are trying to grow our party in a County that has only about 20% Democrats.

A busy summer for Castle Rock democrats

It has been a whirlwind of activity so far this summer for the Castle Rock District Democrats! In addition to our monthly meetings, trainings and fundraisers, we have already completed two group projects and have two more for August.

In June, we formed a twenty person team for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, and raised over $2000 to help fight cancer by walking from 1pm on Saturday, June 20 until 8am on Sunday, June 21. Then, on July 19, fourteen of us created a handicapped access trail and picnic table pad at the Dawson Butte Ranch trailhead off of Tomah Road. Shoveling dirt and granite for hours made that project by far the most physically challenging one we have worked on this year! However, we saw that it was well worth the effort when we were done.

Next up will be a booth at the Douglas County Fair on August 7, 8 and 9. We need volunteers to serve as greeters at the booth for two hour shifts, which is an easy and fun way to help the party. For more information and to sign up, contact either myself at deborahbhill@msn.com or Ralph Jollensten at ralphwj@comcast.net.

On August 15, we will participate as a team in the American Cancer Society's annual Climb to Conquer event, which involves a moderate three mile hike in Castlewood Canyon State Park http://parks.state.co.us/Parks/castlewoodcanyon to raise money and awareness towards eliminating cancer. Participants can register online at http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/CommunityFundraisingPages/CFPFY09GreatWest?team_id=499418&pg=team&fr_id=17953 . It is $35 to register, and you can collect additional pledges if you like, but you do not have to. The team we have set up is the Douglas County Democrats, and the ACS will have a shirt with our team name on the back for everyone who registers. It should be a fun and moving event, with food and music to celebrate and support survivors and memorialize those lost to the disease. For more information, contact either myself at deborahbhill@msn.com or Randy Prince at randy.prince@travelport.com.

Our next monthly meeting will be on August 11, instead of our usual fourth Tuesday meeting. We will meet at 6pm at the Dumb Friends League Buddy Center, 4556 Castleton Court, Castle Rock, 80109. As many of you know, we have been collecting donations for the Buddy Center every month this year, and we will be touring the facility from 6 to 6:30pm, and then sit down from 6:30 to 7:30pm to discuss recent and future business.

We hope to see you at these events. All are welcome!

I think this may be one of the most active groups in Castle Rock! Well done Debbie -
