Blog Entry 49 of 115 Rampart Mick's Idle Thoughts
Really, that's all my writing is. I appreciate your input / feedback and I encourage each of you to try writing and submitting yourself! The worst that can happen (we hope) is you will be called asinine and an idiot, or clueless, and if I can get over THAT, surely you can too.

Want a serious rush? Skip the coffee and try this.

We recently recieved a call from a long time client to remove a tree from the front yard of a house.

Our client is a builder in Escavera subdivision in Castle Rock. Despite their best efforts, the tree had died.

It was my job to get it out without damaging the house or the new landscaping directly under the recently deceased, large ponderosa pine.

I have used a crane to assist with removals a few times in the past. They can make a tough job much simpler. it does require good communication between the crane operator, the climber (in this case me!) and the ground crew.

The first step is climbing high up into the tree's canopy to hook up the cable coming off the crane's boom. Care must be taken to get the cable high enough that the top doesn't flip when it is being lifted. That would be a very bad thing.

The first cut removes most of the top. I can't even begin to tell you the rush of adrenaline I get when that top is lifted up over my head and away. My thoughts go somewhere into the realm of 'please cable, don't fail me now!".

The next two cuts lift the trunk of the tree up and over to the ground crew. From there everything is chipped up and hauled away. A few small twigs and a bunch of sawdust were all that was left to clean up afterwards. We were in and out of there in about 2.5 hours, total.

The homeowner was happy to see her home and new landscaping were untouched. The builder was happy the homeowner was happy. The ground crew was happy the tree was in pieces right next to the chipper.

All the while I kept thinking.......maybe I'm getting too old for this!

A few years ago I invested in one of those backbone rings. Pretty cool and much more substantial than those wimpy ones for the nose. So now they just hook me up there. I have a special shirt I wear with a super-sized button type hole in the back....

So do they just hook the crane to the back belt-loop on your jeans, or do they target the belt itself? I would guess that if you're wearing Levi's it's the former and for everything else it's the latter, but that's just me...

So, let me get this straight... If you find dead wood you cut into three pieces and put it into the wood chipper?

And it took a mighty crane to lift it.....
