Blog Entry 34 of 66 Around the County
Not only do I cover Douglas County for YourHub.com, I'm also a resident. Check in daily to learn about my life here. Sometimes I might talk about something personal, sometimes about something I'm covering for YourHub.com. It's all things Douglas County and Copeland.

Teachers deserve praise
Contributed by: Angela Copeland   on 3/14/2006

I went Saturday evening to the first Apple Awards gala, an event that recognized excellence in teaching, and also served as a fundraiser for the Douglas Educational Foundation.

It was a first-class event at the Hyatt Regency Tech Center. The menu was fabulous, and there was dancing to a live band. It was a fun time and an opportunity to dress up, something teachers rarely get.

Everyone had a fun time. Each Apple Award nominee from each of the 60 schools in the district were there, along with other educators from their schools and businesses who sponsored their tables. A chance for business leaders and educators to connect.

Jodene Kissler, a math teacher from Douglas County High School, was named the Apple Award winner. I was excited for her. I met her just a short time ago. I came to her classroom to take her picture after she was named one of the seven finalists for the award. We laughed as we tried to find an angle that wouldn't show the chalkdust on her sweater. I laughed again at the Saturday ceremony when she said to the crowd she would feel more comfortable up there if she had a sprinking of chalkdust in her hair.

I'd like to say a personal thank you to the folks as Larkspur Elementary School. I sat at their table for the gala, and they were wonderful company. I enjoyed talking to Melissa Lucas, Larkspur's Apple nominee, and her husband, Tony. And I was happy to meet Principal John Melkonian, with whom I had communicated with via e-mail just two weeks ago about an honor the school's art teacher recently won.

Teaching isn't easy, and those who think it is have never tried it. Thank you to all of the teachers in the school district for what they do every day.
