As summer comes to an end, I find myself reflecting on what summer means to me.
Summer is a time when children are out of school and the parks and pools are jammed with kids dripping with popsicle juice and sand stuck to their feet, embarking on little adventures.
But gone are the days when I too ran with such wild abandon. I now have to do things like work, prepare for a new school year, my last year in High School, get my driver's license, and finish a summer reading list.
I used to think that having to do all these things, once out of school, meant that you were sort of robbed of a quality summer, but in all honesty, I was ready to go back to school June 1, and it ended May 30th.
I didn't need a summer this year.
I did do some fantastic things this summer like a two week dance intensive with Kim Robards Dance out of Denver, which I am extremely thankful for. However this year, more then ever, I feel the pull of High School, calling to me. Perhaps I am just looking forward to claiming to have senioritis, seniority, and being a 'seniorita', a phrase my friend coined for the senior girls last year.
Strangely, I no longer hunger for the hot sun, bike rides, and abundance of ice cream. Instead, I long to see my friends and teachers who I have come to really cherish, to be in the midst of play rehearsals, and to roam the halls of the school I have called home for the past 3 years. Douglas County High has been the most life changing place for me. Going back means preserving every day I'm still there and making the most of the time I have there.
College is coming soon for me, a time when the mind can blossom in the midst of peers who have similar goals and drive, and I'll admit it; it's scary. All I did was blink, and here I am, almost at the end of my high school career.
The summers have been great; each a little reminder of what the Douglas County Schools system has given me, indicated by my willingness to return to school each year.
Someday, when I'm done with my education and trying to find my way in life, I will think back on those precious summers when I was younger, discovering new and wonderful things, while I go in pursuit of happiness in an ever-changing world. But for now, I intend to make every second of every day of my senior year at Douglas County High School really count.
After all, before I know it, it'll all be gone in a flash.
