Blog Entry 19 of 23 Conscious Evolution and the World Around You.
This blog will discuss the idea of conscious evolution and how world events may impact that personal or global process. It will also discuss clashing cultural aspects and what we can do to see past our differences and work towards acceptance of our fellow human beings.

Everyone else is doing it.... should I?
Contributed by: Michael Kilman   on 4/11/2008

As children we are told, "just because everyone else is jumping off a bridge doesn't mean you should" The interesting thing to understand is that is exactly what our society is. Our society is a set of culturally defined rules that we are raised to agree upon. For better or for worse we in fact are all jumping off the bridge.

The question is should we participate in the society based rules? Obviously the problem with simply looking at it from this point of view is that there is no one person who follows all of those rules exactly. Individuals disagree with lots of things about society.

But as a whole we do agree with certain concepts. We are very much a materialistic society. We like our possessions, and are suppose to live in a big house with a big backyard. People who live with their families in apartments are often looked down upon (or considered lower class at least) then a person with a home. Manual labor is often also seen as lower class. If you build a house or collect the garbage then you may not be as valuable as say the engineer.

In reality this is a backwards view because we need people to collect our garbage and construct our homes, but we don't really need advanced technology to survive it just gives us a higher standard of living.

My question to you is it a positive to be against societal norms or a negative. There are plenty of things in our culture, which if we really think about them, are counterproductive.

Lets look at our education system for example. The most recent studies show that CSAP tests are very counterproductive, teachers are staring to teach for the tests and not for student's benefit. The current grade system of K-12 does not really cater to the individual growth, and it also teaches information that when you get to college you spend half the time unlearning all you learned.

For example thanksgiving has nothing to do with pilgrims and Indians. The first thanksgiving was during the civil war and the current teaching fosters the idea that the pilgrims did not exploit the native peoples.

All the science shows that our education system is terrible. From what we know (because schools fix the numbers to make themselves look good) only 50% of our students are graduating high school and only 50% of those are college.

Yet the idea of taking away 1st grade or 2nd grade and replacing it with something that would work better is almost offensive. Our education system needs serious reform and the status quo will ostracize you if you disagree with them.

So is it better to follow along and go with the group, or is it better to ask questions and upset the balance? That I leave up to you.
