Blog Entry 123 of 131 Buzz by Barbara
I think about a lot of things. I have opinions about most. What good are thoughts and opinions when not shared? I'll show you mine if you'll show me yours. Issues related to education really get me going. I love to dine on the hot potatoes of school accountability, standardized testing, corporal punishment in schools (outlawed in only about 28 states), scrutiny of school staff before hiring, teacher performance standards, and the weeding out of bad apples in education. I promote fitness as the miracle drug most of us seek. No pill will duplicate the health benefits of working our bodies. I strongly support the adage, "Don't breed or buy while shelter animals die." The world does not need more puppies or kittens. A visit to a local shelter is proof. I consider myself schooled in basic personal money management, the entrepreneurial spirit, domestic adoption, motherood in middle age, Baby Boomer issues, Southern culture, and how to cook a meal in twenty minutes. Whew. So, where shall we start?

Castle Rock Jazzercise reenergized. Be a part!
Contributed by: Barbara Neff   on 5/30/2008

Jazzercise is no stranger to Castle Rock. It has been a presence in our area for more than a dozen years. But the facility, located at 101 Briscoe Street (directly behind the Castle Rock Motel) in downtown Castle Rock recently changed hands.

Cathi Gosselin, new owner of Castle Rock Jazzercise, has re-launched an already dynamic enterprise. With all new interior décor, a new wood floor, overhead fans and bumped up amenities, the great thing that was Castle Rock Jazzercise has been taken to the next level.

While sitting with Cathi Gosselin, Jazzercise instructor, facility owner and operator, I asked her about Jazzercise and all that is new about her reenergized business. Here is what Cathi has to say.

BN: Tell us a little about Jazzercise, Cathi. What is it? Where did it start?

CG: Judi Sheppard Missett fused jazz dance with fitness back in 1969 to create Jazzercise. She is the owner and CEO today. For nearly four decades Jazzercise has been a giant among fitness companies. Judi Sheppard Missett believed fitness can and should be fun. Turns out she was right.

BN: Some people might feel intimidated by a dance-fitness program. Do you have to be a good dancer to benefit from Jazzercise?

CG: Absolutely not! In fact, I am guessing each and every Jazzercise student remembers the awkward first few Jazzercise classes. But, anyone with the ability to laugh a little (we all still laugh at ourselves from time to time), hang in there for a few classes and just keep moving will realize quickly that the handful of basic Jazzercise moves are very simple to master. The key is having fun. The only mistake you can make in Jazzercise is not coming to class.

BN: You are not just the owner of Castle Rock Jazzercise, but an instructor, as well. How long have you been involved in the Jazzercise organization?

CG: I have been teaching Jazzercise classes for eight years. I was a Jazzercise student for twenty-two years before that.

BN: Rumor has it you are quite the motivator. Your students go as far as calling you a "fitness guru". What is your secret?

CG: I love what I do! I love the Jazzercise fitness program, the music, and I love to dance. I suppose that shows in my attitude and everyday life. I appreciate the lifelong friends we all make at Jazzercise, the chance to learn about anatomy and practice a fitness philosophy. I love helping people make wellbeing through fitness a way of life. I love being a part of our happy group.

BN: Do you have plans to celebrate the reenergizing of Castle Rock Jazzercise under your new ownership?

CG: On Friday, June 13, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. we will celebrate a "Fitness Spectacular Gala Health Fair Expo" at Castle Rock Jazzercise, or "open house", for short. We'll offer a free class to new students, demonstrations, door prizes, body fat testing (for a $5 charge), massage, energy bars and drinks, a chance to sample a variety of natural beauty and health products and more. Mostly, we'll have fun. We urge anyone curious about Jazzercise, those who have never tried it or those who loved it once and want to love it again to attend.

BN: Sounds great! Where can people learn more about Jazzercise before attending your event?

CG: Jazzercise.com offers a wealth of information about the program, including class locations, class times and joining fees. For information specific to Castle Rock Jazzercise, please check out castlerockjazz.com. Hope to see everyone at our grand event!
