Blog Entry 59 of 102 A Journalist's Musings
As a journalist, I don't often have the opportunity to share my opinion. So I thought I'd come over here and share my point of view on matters affecting our community and the state. I'm not afraid to take a stand, and I welcome the conversation that will follow if you tell me your point of view!

First two 2007 West Nile Virus deaths in Colorado
Contributed by: Hank Lacey   on 8/10/2007

The Denver Post reports that two people, one 63 years old and the other 77 years old, recently died from West Nile virus.

The first victim died Aug. 2 after becoming infected in mid-July. The second victim died Aug. 4 after becoming infected in late July.

These are the first two deaths from West Nile virus in the state this year.

It's important to remember several key points about fighting West Nile virus:

1. Use bug spray when outdoors.
2. Wear long pants and long sleeves when mosquitoes are active at dawn and dusk.
3. Drain standing pools of water around your home because they provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

The older you are, the higher your risk for West Nile virus complications. Immuune diseases, diabetes, and alcoholism also raise your risk for such complications.

This article fails to mention that a safe and effective treatment for WNV encephalitis was published three years ago. Anybody who wants to download our trial documents can do so for free at any time of day or night from our homepage at www.genomed.com. Beginning treatment early--within the first 48 hrs of encephalitis symptoms--seems to be the only way to avoid long-term sequelae such as paralysis, chronic fatigue, cognitive problems, etc. WNV is notorious for still affecting half of WNV victims 18 months later.
