Healthy Eating
Blog Entry 3 of 22
Changing My Thinking
I know how to eat healthy, but often make unhealthy choices. And, exercise... what's that? I sporatically exercise and make attempts at eating healthy. That's better than nothing, right? It's a beginning.

I found my true hunger last night at 9:00 p.m. This came on my stomach like a storm.
Most people, like me, are so afraid of actually being hungry when dieting and will fill upon "nothing" food like cardboard bread, dry chicken, or rice cakes.
With the hunger coming on strong right at time to go to bed, I was perplexed whether to eat or not. But, I decided that not eating might make my stomach growl all night and keep me up - and everyone else in the house. So, I went downstairs and whipped up what I was really craving: tuna salad with celery and raisins. When I am really hungry, I eat kinda like a pregnant woman with sometimes weird combinations. My body must really be needing raisins, because this morning I made oatmeal with raisins. Here's the recipe: 1/2 cup oatmeal (quick cooking), 1 cup of water, cook in the microwave for about 2 minutes. Add to the top three dashes cinnamon, two dashes nutmeg, one teaspoon brown sugar and a handful of raisins. The raisins plumped as the oatmeal sat while I took two kids to school. (On the side, I have a pet peeve that the middle school and the high school can't set their schedules to beginning 15 minutes apart for those of us with more than one kid to take). When I got home, I did not eat the whole thing, but managed to eat the best parts, especially all of the raisins, paying attention to how my stomach was feeling as I was hungry and only and eating to fill the hunger.
The book I mentioned in my last blog has a really neat page showing an outline picture of a person and two places circled, one the heart and one the stomach as a reminder that you cannot fill the stomach with what can only fill your heart. That's where the prayer comes in.
The key to success: REAL hunger/eating only to fill it. If it happens that I don't happen to eat enough to fill it, I'll be hungry sooner or hungrier the next meal coming and probably will eat more than I would have before.
