Blog Entry 6 of 22 Changing My Thinking
I know how to eat healthy, but often make unhealthy choices. And, exercise... what's that? I sporatically exercise and make attempts at eating healthy. That's better than nothing, right? It's a beginning.

Weighing In
Contributed by: Julie Robinson   on 4/10/2006

Weight on a scale cannot be the measure of success with any diet program. But, throw the scales away? I just can't seem to do that.

I have been weighing morning and night and have lost 3 pounds this week. But, all week long, I've weighed morning and night. How come I can weigh 1.5 pounds more in the morning than at night? Didn't I go to the bathroom twice during the night...and I know I don't sleep eat. I've seen those documentaries recently on people who will actually get out of bed and go to the kitchen, and eat out of the refrigerator. They were awakening with crumbs down their front, and were gaining weight, but didn't know how. So they placed a video camera in the refrigerator to see themselves in the lovely refrigerator light gorging their zombie faces.

Maybe I just need a new scale. Or maybe I'll throw the scale away like I know I ought to.

Julie, all the best to you as you try to shed some unwanted lbs. I threw out my scales about twenty years ago. Very freeing. When they were sitting in my bathroom I nearly obsessed about poundage. I find out about once per year how much I weigh during an annual physical. The rest of the time, if my clothes fit fine and I feel fine....I'm FINE without knowing exactly how many pounds I am carrying around.

In recent issues of either "Self" or "Shape" magazines (I cannot remember which one -- I get both), it said that weighing yourself is important to keep up with how you are doing and can be a true motivator. The important thing is to not get too caught up in discrepancies during any given day. I know my weight would fluctuate 2 pounds in one day. But taking the average over the course of the week, I'd know whether I was on track.
