Blog Entry 36 of 115 Rampart Mick's Idle Thoughts
Really, that's all my writing is. I appreciate your input / feedback and I encourage each of you to try writing and submitting yourself! The worst that can happen (we hope) is you will be called asinine and an idiot, or clueless, and if I can get over THAT, surely you can too.

Remembering Garcy
Contributed by: Michael Rule   on 6/10/2007

Last week we lost a friend.

To me, Garcy Vasquez was at first just another security guard at Castle Pines Village. That is what he was doing when I met him, and that was what he was usually doing when I saw him over the 4 years or so of our acquaintance.

He became much more than that to me as I got to know him. He was obviously so much more than that to everyone whose life he touched.

Susan and I went to his service on Friday. All who were there saw the love and affection felt for him by his family, his friends, his co-workers, and all those who knew him.Prety much everyone who ever came in contact with Garcy was touched by his gentle spirit, his kind words, his love and caring for those around him.

How can I describe for you the way Garcy touched my life? Really, I barely knew the man. I remember when I found out he had been a Colorado State Patrolman for 26 years. How could anyone do that job for that long and not be the slightest bit cynical, I wondered at the time. Cynical would never describe any aspect of this man, I came to learn.

If Garcy was in the guard house when I arrived, he would always take time to say hello, or give me a big wave. He would actually come out of the guard house to say Hi, more often than not. When he was in his patrol car he always had a moment to stop and visit.

Now, when I am on a job I don't usually want to be interrupted. Just ask Susan! But Garcy was one of those people in your life that, when he showed up, you always made time, because you wanted to.

When Garcy talked to me at those moments I felt I wasn't just another contractor in Castle Pines. He had a way of giving you his time that made you feel special to him. I'll bet everyone who knew Garcy felt their friendship with him was special. I know I did. I know Susan did.

My life, like so many of us, is a journey of learning and trying to be a better man. As a boss, when I get impatient I remember Garcy's calm demeanor, and take a deep breath. As a father, I see the love Garcy's children have for him, and I give my son a big hug.

As a business man out in the world I remember how Garcy always made everyone feel special, and I try to give everyone I meet my full attention and my best efforts.

As a friend, I want to always give of myself as I watched Garcy do so many times. As a lover and the future husband of the woman I love, I strive to always be kind and gentle, strong and compassionate. These are virtues I always saw in Garcy Vasquez. I hope someday to see these same virtues more in myself.

When Susan told Garcy we were getting married and wanted him at our wedding, he said he wouldn't miss it for the world. Well, my friend, I know you will be there, in our hearts, in your spirit, in all the ways you touched both of us.

It was a privilege and an honor to have known you, Mr. Garcy Vasquez. Thank you.

What a beautiful tribute! I can't read things like this without crying as I lost my mother, and hero, last November...it sounds like you were lucky to have known him.

Mick, you sum up Garcy's persona perfectly when you say "he had a way of making you feel special to him." I feel sure each and every resident of this neighborhood felt they knew him personally because of his warmth, sunny smile and uncanny ability to call people by name. We were lucky to know him.
