Blog Entry 37 of 45 A view from The Hill
Hi, I'm Joey Kirchmer, author of this blog and a community journalist at YourHub.com. I live at the intersection of 13th and Washington, smack dab in the middle of Capitol Hill. If you have news tips about Capitol Hill or the greater Denver area, feel free to e-mail them to me at kirchmerj@yourhub.com. You can also call me at 303-954-2650. Otherwise, sit back, relax and enjoy these blog entries.

Meet my new puggle, Johnny Utah
Contributed by: Joseph Kirchmer   on 3/19/2008

About a month ago, Jennifer and I decided to venture up to Bailey to look at a litter of puggles that were up for sale. Puggles are a cross between a pug and a beagle.

I was hesitant about getting a puppy, but Jennifer was extremely intent on getting one.

As you might have guessed, I stood no chance. So we forked over some cash and took him home with us.

He was the only male in the litter. We had decided the night before he should be named Johnny Utah, which is Keanu Reeve's character in the movie Point Break. If it was either that or Gravy Train.

He's a handful, to be sure. But he's pretty well suited to our living condition -- an upstairs apartment with no deck, not to mention a backyard. Luckily, I have an endless supply of newspapers here at work that we can bring home for him to do his business on.

Utah weighs in at about 4 lbs. and is, for all intents and purposes, a toy dog. He will only tack on about 6 to 8 more pounds when he's fully grown. Not much bigger than a cat.

This is our second dog. The first one, Bella Donna Shortcakes, didn't work out. She was a great puppy, but certainly was not happy about sitting around in an apartment all day. She literally tore up hundreds of dollars worth of furniture and other miscellaneous goods.

The chewing problem will probably never be a major issue with Utah. He's just too small to cause much damage. The pooping and peeing problem, however, is another issue altogether. But it's a work in progress and I think it will gradually work itself out as he gets older.

Your life changes considerably when you become a dog owner. Your schedule begins to revolve around their schedule. Not that I mind all that much, but your social life definitely takes a hit, to be sure.

He's worth it though. It's always nice to have someone seem so incredibly happy to see you come home at the end of the day.

YourHub.com always welcomes your submissions for new additions, be it a baby, dog, cat or any other creature. Post them today on the Web site and it could land in our print edition.
