RLO - John Gets His Wish
Contributed by: Kevin Platts   on 5/6/2007

As we all know, each of us "project" feelings and emotions towards those who are around us. We allow them to see what we want them to see. When we first me someone new, we are somewhat guarded, but as we become comfortable with them, we begin to "loosen" up. This is the normal course of events anyway.

About a yearago, I met John at the Real Life Office. As a matter of fact, not only did I meet him, but quickly learned we would be sharing a cubicle. Johnseemed alright, so I didn't really have a problem sharing space with him.

John more or less broke the mold as far as revealing himself to "strangers." What I mean is that he immediately opened up to just about everyone. When I first met him, I was surprised when he exclaimed to not only me, but virtually anyone who would listen, that he was going to get fired. As time passed, I heard John continue to make this declaration. I believed he was merely joking around and using this as a way to break the ice.

Imagine my surprise when I learned last week that John was in fact being fired from his position. I learned this from John directly. He seemed somewhat shocked and said he couldn't understand what had happened.

I told John that from my perspective it appeared he "talked" his boss into firing him. In other words, John so often said he was going to get fired that it wasn't hard for his boss to "pull the trigger" as soon as he wasn't satisfied with John's performance. Additionally, I asked John if he would want someone on his team if the person constantly walked around talking about getting fired. John said he understood my point and could now see how it was easy for his boss to get rid of him when the going got tough.

I believe this is what we call a self fulfilling prophecy. Hence the reason I walk around constantly reminding people that they and the agency couldn't survive without me. Seems to be working so far.

People are so gullible.
