Yesterday I was sitting in a park outside of Colorado Springs, basking in the sun, learning some basics about rock climbing, and wishing I had worn shorts and a short sleeved T-shirt.
Today I am sitting at my desk, sipping on my 15th cup of decaf and watching it snow.
The temperature hovers in the mid-twenties and I'm looking for my beanie before I head out to split more wood for the fire. The wind is driving the snow more horizontal than anything. We are getting some pretty impressive gusts from time to time.
Welcome to Colorado in March.
I have seen some huge blizzards around here this time of year. I have seen beautiful days (like Saturday) where you just want to pull up a blanket and take a nap under a tree somewhere.
Most of the crew is ready to get back to work. I'd like to say I'm with them on that, but....I'm kinda enjoying my off season, to tell you the truth.
The sun will be back soon enough, the snow will melt soon enough, and the season will swing into gear soon enough.
I'm also kinda drawn to extreme weather. That is one of the reasons I love living up here near Monument Hill so much. We catch a lot of that upslope action. We get amazing snowstorms, awesome thunderstorms, fantastic sunrises and sunsets, and hailstorms that can pound the heart out of the toughest gardener.
My cat Carmel is not nearly so impressed. He is about 12 now, and dates back to my first year here, when I was living in a 24-foot travel trailer while I worked on The Homestead. Carmel and I spent that first winter keeping each other company. We have some serious history together.
These days he is more than content to sleep the day away in front of the fire. I'm thinking that's not a bad idea.
First, though, it's out to split and gather up some firewood. Then, knowing me like I do, a hike around while it snows and blows will most likely be in order.
March in Colorado. Gotta love it.
