Review: Big City Burrito
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard/YourHub.com   on 10/30/2006

Big City Burrito
15932 Jackson Creek Parkway, Monument

Nothing against Colorado Springs, but one of my favorite things about it is that when I drive there from Denver, on the way back, I get to stop at Big City Burrito in Monument.

Big City is probably familiar to anyone who has spent a significant amount of time in Fort Collins. Whether or not the Big City Potato Burrito is "famous," I can't say. I can say that it is right up there with the Internet and kidney transplants as far as its value to the future of human civilization is concerned.

Grade: A+
Napkins: Paper
Tablecloths: None

My friend Nick and I often drive down to Colorado Springs to climb at Red Rock Canyon Open Space, and after several hours sweating, grunting and leaving bits of skin and fingernail on the canyon walls, it is almost a given that we will stop at Big City on our way back to Denver.

And it is a given that I will order a Super (12-tortilla; the regular is a 10-inch tortilla) Potato Burrito. When you're a vegetarian, burrito joints usually offer one choice: The Veggie Burrito. Places that have potato burritos are the Holy Grail -- the only other one I know of is Illegal Pete's, but they fry their potatoes in the same oil they fry fish in, and even traces of fish can be a big problem for the vegetarian stomach.

Big City's potato burrito contains five ingredients the way I like it: Fried potatoes, cheese, grilled onions, ranch dressing and salsa. This sounds like it's missing something, I know, but once you eat it, you won't think so. I would eat dog food if it was covered inthe same seasoning Big City uses on its potatoes.

Nick, the carnivore, tends to experiment more, with the Carnitas, Chile Verde, Chicken Mole and Carne Asada burritos, and has never reported any disappointment. A few weeks ago, he was beaten by the "Gut Buster": Two tortillas, rice, beans, cheese, potatoes, double meat, salsa, guacamole and sour cream, if I remember correctly. It's $9.29, which lets you know how big it really is when you compare it with the $4.99 Super Potato Burrito. I couldn't stop laughing while I watched the lady put it together. It was truly the size of a newborn baby when she rolled it up, and it was a feat of true burrito artistry that she actually rolled it without ripping the tortilla or spilling any ingredients. Nick ate all but about eight bites of it.

I've eaten at the Big City locations in Boulder and Loveland, but mostly at the one off Exit 148 in Monument. Big City doesn't have much in the way of atmosphere and the decor is nothing special, but those things are totally irrelevant once you've taken your first bite of your first burrito.

Oh, and they have about 20 varieties of hot sauce, if that's your thing.

If you ever get a chance to try El Jimidor in Brighton or Northglenn, I highly recommend it. Two people can easily split an entree there and be full. It's so good, you'll want to smack yo momma.

I can attest to the superb taste of the potato burrito, and to the courage of Nick for attempting to defeat the Gut Buster.
