Blog Entry 39 of 45 A view from The Hill
Hi, I'm Joey Kirchmer, author of this blog and a community journalist at YourHub.com. I live at the intersection of 13th and Washington, smack dab in the middle of Capitol Hill. If you have news tips about Capitol Hill or the greater Denver area, feel free to e-mail them to me at kirchmerj@yourhub.com. You can also call me at 303-954-2650. Otherwise, sit back, relax and enjoy these blog entries.

Summer plans include watching TV, staying home
Contributed by: Joseph Kirchmer   on 6/3/2008

Summer -- a time to plan that family vacation, attend a few concerts, spend a little money at restaurants and bars.

Unfortunately, my summer plans include none of those activities. Instead, I will be sitting at home with Jennifer and my puppy Johnny Utah, probably watching TV and eating macaroni and cheese (or something cheap).

I've decided to ground myself this summer. Why? I'm deep in debt and it's time to get out.

A quick check of my account shows I still have roughly $3,800 to pay off. I can't really remember how it got that high, but I know car repairs, a new suit, Denver Nuggets playoff tickets and a vacation to Key West, Fla. played a considerable role.

My goal is to have that figure down to about $1,000 by the end of the summer season. My stimulus check (which I still haven't received) should help me get closer to that number.

I figure I can have my debt totally paid off by the end of the year -- barring any major unforseen expenses.

I seriously can't wait for that to happen. It will be an amazing sense of relief. I plan to hold a party and take pictures that document my final payment.

You see, it's hard to really get going in life if you're saddled with debt. Buying a new home, car, or whatever isn't easy when you're in the red.

So it's time to buckle down -- no trips to Starbucks, no concerts and no vacations. Just work and home life. Anyone know any good books?

Tell me about your summer plans. Post vacation photos, concert reviews and whatever else you see fit to the site.

I promise I won't get jealous.
