Blog Entry 75 of 111 Rampart Mick's Idle Thoughts
Really, that's all my writing is. I appreciate your input / feedback and I encourage each of you to try writing and submitting yourself! The worst that can happen (we hope) is you will be called asinine and an idiot, or clueless, and if I can get over THAT, surely you can too.

Keep the government out of Christmas!
Contributed by: Michael Rule   on 12/26/2007

It seems every year there are heated discussions on the topic of government-sanctioned Christmas celebrating. Let me establish right here and now that I am firmly against connecting the two.

Some will tell me the Founding Fathers were religious. Some will tell me they weren't. Some will say they intended God to be part of our society. Some will say they did not. Both sides can quote long-dead politicians ad nauseum.

I don't care. I want them kept separate, OK?

This morning I drove Susan to the airport. That's when it hit me. Why do our government entities give their employees Christmas (and often either the day before or the day after) off as a paid holiday?

I mean really, isn't that kind of blurring the lines here?

A government doing its' best to push back at the creeping tide of religious zealots in this world should have recognized a long time ago the inherent dangers here. Isn't this a bias towards Christianity?

I say it is time to re-write the contracts. Put these bureaucrats behind their desks on December 25th! No holds barred in our quest for correctness!

Now, lest you start thinking me a grinch who wants to steal your Christmas, let me say that personally, I don't care. I'd just as soon let everybody have the day off with pay, but we're not talking about what I want here.

We are discussing the common good, and some must always be sacrificed for the common good..

Just like saying Merry Christmas is politically bad, bad, bad, so is officially recognizing a religious holiday, right?

So, I find myself in a quandary. A bit of a Catch-22. How do I both push for the elimination of paid religious holidays by our government, and support the people who would be affected?

I have a plan. Once our elected officials come to their senses and realize the error of their ways, I will steadfastly show my support for the common bureaucrat.

I will promise, on my honor, that neither I, nor anyone connected with my company will work on December 25 th. Ever again. Just tell the politicians to change the law so they have to.

Even if it snows, as it did this year, we will not start our trucks. No plow blades shall caress the freshly driven snow for 24 hrs. No shoveling shall be performed.

Not a tree shall fall unless it is meant for the festivities in the house (Oops, did I just cross the line?).

We shall strive to represent our paper pushing brethren by pushing nothing more than a fork into the potatoes. We shall honor those noble heads in Congress and the White House by drinking egg nog and babbling incessantly.

Strong measures? Yes. This isn't something for the weak of heart.

If we are truly going to rid our public sector of any religious connotations, this is what we must do. We need to get everyone drawing a government paycheck out there working! There can be no Christmas in the public sector! Bah Humbug!

And then, to support those put on the job, keeping our churches separate from our States, we must support them by NOT WORKING!

I hope you are with me on this important issue of our times.....if we hurry we can do something about them having New Year's Day off, too.

I sincerely hope your blog is tongue in cheek. If not then let me say you are much too easily offended. You talk about separating religious holiday's from being recognized by the government. The reality is the government is made up of people just like you and I that cherish Christmas and the time off spent with Family. I mean your line "doing its' best to push back at the creeping tide of religious zealots in this world". Give me a break and stop comparing Islamic extremists with Christians. Nothing is being pushed on you any more than celebrating Octoberfest in downtown Castle Rock is promoting Germany. Please get a life an stop trying to ruin everyone else's.

I'm thinking maybe we could substitute May 18th for Dec. 25th. You know, so everyone could properly celebrate the birth of Brooks Robinson! Given time, I'm sure I could come up with a quote from a founding father extolling the virtues of the defensive third-baseman.

I like your tree. Hope you enjoyed Christmas and I hope it stays a special holiday to honor Jesus' birth. That was an awesome day!

Actually, we are also celebrating the Winter Solstice and Saturnalia, although they are never mentioned by name, so maybe it is OK? (It was great for me being a federal employee, although I managed to spend 5 hours volunteering at NORAD, where I don't work). I could stand to have New Year's Eve off, though, although I have to go in to work that day...
