Council to vote on tastings at liquor stores
Contributed by: Joseph Kirchmer/YourHub.com   on 11/27/2007

Town council is expected to pass an ordinance tonight (Nov. 27) that allows liquor stores to hold tastings, but at least one council memberfeels the idea is a solution in search of a problem.

Councilman Hank Lacey was the lone "no" in a first reading of the ordinance Nov. 13 that allows liquor stores in town to give out samples of wine, beer and liquor. The ordinance, which passed on a 6-1 vote, was originally proposed by the owners of Plum Creek Liquors.

Lacey said the proposal will likely put more intoxicated drivers out on the streets and will putstrain on a police department that is already stretched thin.

"First and foremost, it will increase the likelihood that someone will drive under the influence of alcohol," he said. "Even though the law includes some limits, people's tolerance for alcohol is different."

The version of Castle Rock's ordinance would be more restrictive than what's currently allowed under state law. For example, under state law, liquor stores are allowed to hold tastings 104 days in a calendar year.

Under Castle Rock's ordinance, liquor stores would only be allowed to have tastings 25 days out of the year. The proposal also would restrict tastings to a three-hour limit even though the state limit is five hours.

Still, Lacey said it's a risky proposition.

"No one is clamoring for this," he said. "Why take a chance?"

What do you think? Should liquor stores be allowed to hold tastings to help increase their business or is this in invitation for more DUIs?
