Blog Entry 96 of 102 A Journalist's Musings
As a journalist, I don't often have the opportunity to share my opinion. So I thought I'd come over here and share my point of view on matters affecting our community and the state. I'm not afraid to take a stand, and I welcome the conversation that will follow if you tell me your point of view!

One small step for Castle Rock
Contributed by: Hank Lacey   on 12/8/2007

A few weeks ago the Castle Rock Town Council took a small, but I think symbolically important, step to reduce the community's collective greenhouse gas impact.

The Council approved a resolution by Katie Kruger (District 1-Meadows) requiring that no more bottled water be provided to town employees at Town Hall. The resolution makes an exception for "special circumstances," such as when volunteers are cleaning up a creek, but will make for a new drinking experience for guests at Town Hall. The resolution also bans plastic cups at town facilities, so people attending meetings at any Castle Rock government building will likely be drinking water drawn from the tap, or possibly from multi-gallon dispensers, in a paper cup.

The resolution also forbids the town from providing free soft drinks and, as I understood it, that ban does not have a "special circumstances" loophole. If you want to have a soda when you're at Town Hall, or the police department, bring some change for the machines.

Councilwoman Kruger's resolution is a small step, yes, but it sends a powerful message that public employees in Castle Rock aren't going to be adding more plastic bottles to the landfills, at least not at taxpayer expense, and it says the Town isn't going to pay for health-harming sodas, either.

As I recall, Councilman Doug Lehnen (District 6-Crystal Valley/Plum Creek) was the only "no" vote.

Michael, I would invite you to go to the following link. This is not a new idea in Castle Rock. The Mayor of SF has done the same thing and the New York State Government is looking into this as well. With just a little research you can find plenty of other municipalities that have done the exact same thing. http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/06/25/san-francisco-mayor-takes-on-bottled-water/

Can someone please do a catscan of Councilwoman Katie? We need to see if there is any living tissue in her head. This isn't a small step, this is an absurd step.
