Blog Entry 81 of 102 A Journalist's Musings
As a journalist, I don't often have the opportunity to share my opinion. So I thought I'd come over here and share my point of view on matters affecting our community and the state. I'm not afraid to take a stand, and I welcome the conversation that will follow if you tell me your point of view!

My comments on IPCC final climate change report
Contributed by: Hank Lacey   on 11/27/2007

I delivered the following remarks at the special Town Council meeting held on Tuesday, Nov. 20:

"I want to call attention to the last report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was released in Spain this past weekend. According to the report, the world's climate is changing due in large part to human activities that release greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane to the atmosphere. The IPCC, which is made up of 2,500 scientists from around the world and which recently was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its work, predicts that, if these emissions are not brought under control and reduced soon, it is likely that the planet will experience a number of very unpleasant unconsequences.

"These include further melting of the Arctic ice cap and the Greenland ice sheet, as well as continued loss of Antarctic ice; rising sea levels, even to a point at which some island nations and coastal cities would be partially or totally submerged; the loss to extinction of at least one-fourth of the species on the Earth; widespread famine in areas of the world that already experience grinding poverty and deprivation, such as Africa; and more frequent and more intense storm activity, including hurricanes.

"I have made no secret of my strong belief that government leaders at all levels have a solemn obligation to do all that is possible to heed these warnings and help Americans find ways to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions impact. That duty falls even on us here in Castle Rock. I am heartened by Mr. Stevens' efforts, and the efforts of his team of managers, to begin work on an environmental sustainability plan for our community. I hope we here on the Council will exert visionary leadership on this issue and help this town become a national and world leader in efforts to combat global climate change."

Michael, note my entry about the demise of the planned sustainability project. The Council also, over my 'no' vote and Councilwoman Kruger's,approved an annexation for another new subdivision on Nov. 27. That was done even though the project proponent offered little information about the planned development. No conditions were attached to the annexation approval. It will come back for second reading and possible final approval sometime early in the new year, I think. In any case, I agree that we are not doing enough to get people out of their cars. Please come to our Dec. 11 meeting and speak in favor of my proposal to create an Environmental Advisory Commission. If created, that will give the people who live here a direct voice in creating things to make Castle Rock more liveable, more walkable, less congested, and more environmentally progressive.

Hmmm, like designing more developments such as The Meadows or Founders, where you can't walk to a grocery store or 7-11 for milk? Or maybe we should build more roads so people have to idle their cars in lines less? I would say the development of Castle Rock is a classic case of contributing TO global warming by putting the automobile first and foremost.
