A league of his own

A candidate has finally won me over. I shouldn't say finally; I've liked him for a while now, but I'm finally confident in everything he has to offer. Let me describe this candidate for you.

The first word that any person writing an article in favor of him chooses is 'Charisma'. To be sure, his speeches have been nothing but charismatic, with positivity rolling like a river between the lines of promises for change.

I had the opportunity to go to one of his book signings last year around my birthday and I was still unsure, as a voter, if he truly had everything I wanted in my President. I waited in line on three floors of the Tattered Cover to shake the hand of Charisma but there were also 1,000 other people there so I wasn't counting on it.

Numbers were handed out to the first 350 people in line that they expected him to get to; I was number 352. My mother, brother, and I stayed in line, not disheartened by our placement.

As we approached the very room he was in, someone could be heard speaking over a microphone... I couldn't see anyone so I figured that they had to be in the signing room. It turned out to be Mayor Hickenlooper (another avid painter in the art of Charisma, stemming from his Vespa-backed campaign ads) introducing the man I was standing in line to meet.

He talked about the importance of a man who brings something new to the table. Someone who stands for change and inspires the youth of America to stand up for what they believe in.

The microphone was turned over to the man of the moment and in a few short paragraphs, he promised something that caught my attention. Hope.

He promised hope to America. Hope of a new and better world. I wasn't getting out of line for anything now. I needed to see the face of Charisma and Hope.

As we got into the blessed room, finally he came into view. I've never seen someone smile more in my entire life, and he smiled to everyone.

I observed as a tiny little woman who looked to be in her late 80s approached his table. She said something to him quietly, which caused him to laugh and shake her hand gently. The moment only lasted a few seconds, but it was beautiful.

I was getting anxious now. What do you say to a man who could be the next President of the United States of America?

I was hoping that they wouldn't look at my number 352 and turn me away. They didn't.

I stepped up on deck and was prompted with the most whirlwind directions I had ever been given in my life. I was allowed 30 seconds to talk to the most influential man of my time.

As I stepped up to his table, he firmly shook my hand and smiled.

"Thank you for all you do," I said. "You're an inspiration."

How many people in his life have ever said that to him? Who knows, I could be on of a million, but I really meant it.

"Thank you for coming out today," he said, as though he had never said it to anyone else. He signed my book and handed it back as the woman tried to rush us away.

But he stopped her. He called my brother over and shook his hand and then shook my mother's hand with a wink. "Thank you for all you do," he said kindly to my mother, from parent to parent.

That's when I saw it. The Charisma was not about what he said in his speeches, it was about how he spoke to every person that he met. I didn't get to stay any longer to talk to him but he waved as we left.

I was won over from that very moment. Who cares how many other candidates take the time to meet every person that wakes up at four in the morning to meet them? Just this one man taking time he didn't have to meet my brother (who can't vote for another 6 years) and shake my mother's hand showed me that he knows whom he needs to win over.

Not JUST the voters, but all Americans. The newspaper said the next day that he got to 500 people that day.

I thought in the car on the way home about how the President of the United States is essentially married to America. He (or She) is supposed to provide for our welfare, see that we're fed, care for our young and our old, and make sure we're playing nicely with other countries.

This new and wonderfully eye opening candidate has already promised to have what it takes to hold Office from the day he is inaugurated, to better conditions for those worse off, to raise taxes for the richer middle class to help the poor, and to provide for the ill and finally establish universal health care. What he had to prove to the people was that he would love, honor, and cherish America 'till death (or end of term) do us part.

If he is elected, I think America is in for a very happy marriage. I support Barack Obama for President in '08!

That statement 'richer middle class' was meant to match with the traditional wedding vows, I am an informed voter. This was just a personal account of one of the many reasons why I like Barack. This is what I thought of him when I first started to like him, but I was star-struck, which inspired me to read up on the new Democratic intended nominee.

I like Obama very much as a person, too. As far as president, I am unsure. Raise taxes for the "richer middle class"? Hmmmmm, I'm not sure who that includes, but I'll bet it's most of Douglas County. Last year I was in the 40% bracket; I certainly don't feel rich. How much more does the government need? It sounds like a progrm to punish those out busting their arse. Here's a novel idea.....work with the taxes we already pay.... I agree we need a president who will inspire, and Obama could very well be that person, but I have serious questions to ask before I cast my vote. This blog sounds a touch starry-eyed to me, Kate.
