Renaissance of relationships - Summit Church
Contributed by: Wayne Hanson   on 9/26/2007

Renaissance means "Rebirth" in french, the period of The Medici family in Italy and how it translates to connecting a disconnected culture of Americans in a global sense today draws some great parallels to that important time in History, just a few centuries ago.

One of the Highest values that we have at Summit Church is the value of living connected with others in Christian Community.

Blog Objective: Everyone can experience a Rebirth in Life-Giving Relationships by Recognizing the power of Christian Community and Small Groups.

Acts 2:42-47 says42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.?

There is a great need in every person to connect with others on a deep and soulish level. Two families live side by side in a local neighborhood in Castle Rock.

The first family has built it's life around the accumulation of wealth through strong business networking. Even though mom stays at home, she runs a successful micro-business and she pulls all of her girlfriends into her internet-based business with her.

She spends the balance of her days after school taking kids to soccer, then karate, then ballet and then straight home to do homework and off to bed. Dad goes to work and works late.

Goes to drinks with his buddies and can't seem to get his "work-world" connected to his "home-world."So, he just lives in two worlds, and sometimes these worlds are VERY far apart.

Each day is just like the next, only the weekends offer extended time for more sports and maybe a trip to the lake or the mountains with a few friends or business acquaintances.

When family number 1 has the chance to be alone with their thoughts, they sometimes ask "Is this all there is?""Why am I not happy?""Will this marriage survive?" and "What kind of kids are we raising?"

Family number two, as I said, lives right next to family number one. They've never spoken, only smiled and waved.

Their kids are much older than the first family and they never interact. This family goes to church, they do many of the same things family one does only it seems that it's only with other "church people"

There may be an occasion when Dad number 2 sees Dad number 1 at the store; they smile and wave; and after years of this these families continue on without anything deeper than a conversation about the weather, local politics or what's happening in the HOA.

Family number two lives a lonelier life, their kids aren't athletic and money seems tighter. So, they just keep trying to work harder to make ends meet and to be creative with their finances. Many of the same problems exist in their "Christian" home, they've just found better ways to mask the problems and gloss over their pain with a plastic smile and a few feeble prayers to "claim the victory."

But when family number two finds themselves alone with their thoughts they often ask: "Is this all there is?" "Why am I not happy?" "Will this marriage survive?" and "What kind of kids are we raising?"

So, in many ways these families seem different. But in other ways, they are very much the same.

(The Need for Christian Community is a need common to all mankind. Christian or NOT)

Psalm 133:1 says1How good and pleasant it is ? when brothers live together in unityOne of the most vital things that Jesus modeled for us in his life was "Living in Community"

The 'Jesus' Method of Small Groups

1.He Selected Twelve Guys (and eventually Seventy Disciples)

2.He Spent his entire life with them

3.He Taught Them

·Gave them inside info (keys to the kingdom)

·Encouraged them

·Rebuked them

·Commissioned them

We all need "Christian Community" for 7 Reasons

1.It Fills a deep need to know others.

2.It Fills a deep need to be known by others.

3.It Helps to Instruct us in our ignorance.

4.It Creates a network of Support in our lives.

5.It Keeps us accountable to live out our faith.

6.It provides opportunity for the Holy Spirit to speak to us.

7.It's the primary way that Christ's church has advanced for 2000+years.

You know, the way I see it, you can build your life on YOUR OWN set of values or you can build your family on the timeless values of the scriptures and the Life-Giving principles of Jesus Christ.

My Sentiments can be summed up well by a song I heard recently:

This here's a song about two sets of Jones'

Rothchild, Evelyn, Rueben, and Sue

And just for discussion through random selection

We've chosen two couples who haven't a clue

Rothchild was lucky to marry so wealthy,

Evelyn bought him a house on the beach.

Rueben and Sue, they had nothing but Jesus

And at night they would pray that he would care for them each

Chorus:

And the rain, came down,

And it blew the forewalls down

And the clouds they rolled away

And one set of Jones', was standing that day

Evelyn's daddy was proud of young Rothchild,

He worked the late hours to be number one

Just newly weds and their marriage got rocky,

He's flying to Dallas, she's having a son.

Rueben was holding, a Giddeon's Bible,

And he screamed "it's a boy" so that everyone heard

And the guys at the factory took a collection,

And again God provided for bills he incured

(Chorus)

So what is the point of this story,

What am I trying to say

Well is your life built on the rock of Christ Jesus

Or a sandy foundation you've managed to lay

Well needless to say Evelyn left her husband

N' sued him for every penny he had

But I truly wish that those two would find Jesus

Before things get worse than they already have

(Chorus)

And the rain, came down,

And it blew the forewalls down

And the clouds they rolled away

There's two sets of jones'

Which ones will you be?

li de di, li de di, li de di, li de di

li de di, li de di, li de di, li de di

li de di. li de di, li de di, li de di di di di

(Big Tent Revival, Two Sets of Jones')

WHY LIVE IN CHRISTIAN COMMUNTIY?

·BECAUSE JESUS MODELED IT WITH HIS DISCIPLES

·BECAUSE YOUR LIFE WILL BE RICHER FOR IT

·BECAUSE THERE'S NO BETTER WAY TO LIVE.
