Blog Entry 20 of 66 Around the County
Not only do I cover Douglas County for YourHub.com, I'm also a resident. Check in daily to learn about my life here. Sometimes I might talk about something personal, sometimes about something I'm covering for YourHub.com. It's all things Douglas County and Copeland.

Maybe this shouldn't be a pet peeve
Contributed by: Angela Copeland   on 2/13/2006

My husband and I went to a church in Castle Rock on Sunday. It was our first visit to this church. Since moving into town, we've simply visited a different church each Sunday, hoping one will feel like home to us.

OK. Here is my pet peeve. And it is not specifically directed at the church we just visited. In fact, many of the churches we visit do this same thing. I can stay quiet no longer.

Why do so many churches no longer use a hymnal? I asked myself that question, and I first thought maybe it is to save the cost of the hymnal. But no. I looked and there was a hymnal tucked into its pocket in front of me. So then I was at another loss. I guess churches feel the need to "connect" to the young people by projecting lyrics via PowerPoint slides on some big screen at the front. But, if it's a song you don't know, then you have no idea what the melody is. I can't sing if I don't know how to sing. I stand there silently, and maybe by the third verse, I can join in because I now know the melody.  It is my Sunday frustration.

Am I alone in this? Does anyone else feel this way? And if you don't help me. I'm having trouble finding the rhythm.

There are many reasons a lot of churches have moved away from hymnals. One reason is the shift to contemporary Christian music. Many churches are singing the songs that people hear on radio stations like K-LOVE (91.1). At www.ccli.com and you can see the top 25 songs being sung in contemporary churches. Projection also allows pictures with the words that enhance the message of the song. Another reason is the change of worship style in many churches with people raising hands in worship. This style has grown beyond the Charismatic churches and is seen in many churches today. It’s hard to raise your hands if you’re holding a hymnal. And most find that there is a difference in singing when people are looking up at a screen instead of down at a hymnal. Of course, there are still many churches in town that have a more traditional style of worship and still use hymnals. I believe Reformation Church is still hymnal based, along with several of the smaller Baptist and Lutheran Chu
