Douglas County voters decided Douglas County, one of the fastest growing school districts in Colorado, will not receive additional money to build new schools and to increase technology district wide.
As of 10:22 p.m., Ballot Issue 3A did not pass. Of the 113,361 votes cast, 60,150 votes were against the Mill Levy hike, while 53,211were for it.
Ballot issue 3A, asked voters to consider a mill levy override that would have increased the school district's budget by $17 million. This amount would have gone towards maintaining the district's programs as well as recruiting and maintaining teachers.
Ballot Issue 3B faced a similar fate. Of the 111,525 votes cast, 59,431 were against the Ballot Issue, while 52,532 votes were for it.
Ballot issue 3B would have asked $395 million from voters, which would have gone towards renovating nearly 50 schools, increasing technology infrastructure, specifically the district's Wide Area Network and for the construction of 10 elementary schools.
Pat McGraw, the chief of staff with the Douglas County School District, said voter turnout for Election 2008 was very good, however the results were disappointing.
"We'll work with the budgets we have, we'll have to do some things differently and that will require us to make some cuts," McGraw said.
The combined cost to voters for both measures would have been about $10 a month or 33 cents a day on the average Douglas County home valued at $372,000.
