Town conducted study to preserve Preble's mouse
Contributed by: Joseph Kirchmer/YourHub.com on 4/17/2007

I notice that the city is doing work on the creek the goes under Wilcox Street at Second Street. Question: Is this Preble's mouse territory? I understand the area west of Wilcox has been considered protected because of the mouse. Was an environmental study done and approved before the destruction of the natural habitat began? Just wondering.

The answer to your question is yes, the town conducted a study before the cleanup began on Sellers Gulch.

The town drafted a habitat conservation plan that outlines the impact that will occur to the Preble's mouse habitat and the measures that will be taken to mitigate those impacts, according to Barbara Spagnuolo, natural resource specialist for the parks and recreation department.

The conservation plan was approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2006, she said. The plan covers all of Sellers Gulch, including the area near the intersection of Wilcox and Second streets, she said.

The Preble's mouse lives primarily in heavily vegetated, shrub-dominated riparian habitats, including the area around Sellers Gulch. It is protected under the Endangered Species Act, though it is possible that it will be delisted.
