Counterfeiter stopped by dairy queen
Contributed by: Francis Miller on 7/5/2006

Everyone who knows me knows my weakness for ice cream. So, the other day when I came out of the Castle Rock Library I looked across the vast parking lot shimmering in the hot sun and saw an oasis: the Dairy Queen. So I headed for the drive-in and ordered my usual: a large cone, dipped. When I reached the window, I gave the girl a five dollar bill. She took it and a minute later said, "Sir, are you aware the money you gave me is counter-feit?" "Impossible, I said, that money was change from a $50 bill at Petsmart."

Well, to make it a long story short, it was counterfeit. I compared it to two other fives in my billfold and it looked slightly different, but I would never have known. It was old and, obviously, had made the rounds.

But, what really impressed me was the girl behind the counter. I told her she was pretty smart to identify the bill. She laughed and said, "I also know Spanish".

Well, off I went with my cone, my counter-feit five but, short one less genuine five. As I drove home, I could not get that girl off my mind. In my many years in business and thousands of retail transactions, I have never seen a clerk identify bad money. She just seemed special.

So, the next day, I grabbed my camera and headed back down to Castle Rock to interview this young lady. I walked in to the Dairy Queen and she was working at her post. I asked if I could take her picture and interview her, which caused quite a stir with the manager and other employees.

Here's the scoop. She is Jordynn Clark, 16 years old and a student at Douglas County High School. She isn't sure what she wants to do, but she does want to go to college. And, she does know Spanish. My guess is she won't have much of a problem getting a date for the prom.

In encountering some one like Jordynn, it makes you realize that there are some really great young people out there and renews your faith that the next generation is going to be just as great as previous generations. Kids, like Jordynn, who want to work, do well in school, get a college degree, and still be social are out there, sometimes you just have to pan some sand and gravel to find the gold nuggets. I have to believe she has good parents and friends.

I hope that everyone in Douglas County will go down to the Dairy Queen in Castle Rock and buy a cone and give her a tip. Just get off at the Plum Creek exit and turn left(south) on Wilcox and go one block. It is on your right(east side).

I think Jordynn Clark deserves to be Douglas County's employee of the month for July. Just don't try to pay for your ice cream with money from your Monopoly game. She is too quick to fall for that one.

What a great story! The young woman in the story just happens to be my daughter's sister-n-law and we think that she's great too! Ruby Clark, Ukiah, Ca
