A Sharp Eye
My Grandfather could put a sharpshooter to shame,
He could shoot straight at any kind of game.
Every year he hunted, he would always get a deer,
Cured just right it was good as eating steer.
One year with an injured foot from a horse,
He told the others to go ahead, he would be along of course.
The others pushed on ahead in the deer hunt,
He lagged behind like a dog litter with a runt.
He stopped to heat his sandwich for lunch,
When he heard a noise behind, he had a hunch.
He picked up his 300 and slowly turned round,
What he saw very near him was pretty profound.
A four hundred pound black bear was standing there,
He was tall and tough looking with long black hair.
Have a bite of this my Grandfather said to the bear,
And the 300 round parted his slick black hair.
Down the bear went just 30 paces away,
A bullet between his eyes, he didn't even sway.
I remember once when I was just a little guy,
We were on the upper road under a big blue sky.
My Granddad stopped the wagon with a word to each horse,
Run to the house ask your Grandma for the 300 of course.
Racing to and fro with that old 300 tight in each hand,
I felt like I was the leader of the world's greatest band.
My Grandpap said, do you see that groundhog about 400 yards away,
I searched and strained and couldn't see anything but fresh mown hay.
He told his huge work horses, stand easy now boys,
And shouldered that rifle like it was one of my wooden toys.
The horses, nary a jerk they made as the rifle cracked the air,
We got off of the wagon to inspect what had happened there.
It seemed like we walked forever to check out the prize,
But I couldn't believe what I saw before my eyes.
There lay two groundhogs, both dead with one shot,
I knew right then his sighting eye was deadly hot.
No sense in wasting two bullets on each field pest,
When one bullet will give them both eternal rest.
If I hadn't seen it with my very own eyes,
I would swear who was telling it, it was a pack of lies.
But men of the farm do what must always be done,
And bless them for their keen eyesight from Number One!

Ok, so great. he sees a bear and shoots it. I'm not impressed. Shooting groundhogs for sport does not seem to me doing what needs to be done. Maybe they should have looked at the overgrazing the cattle were doing.......and shot a few of them.
