Hands
Hands are a very special body part,
They've done things that touched you're heart.
I knew two pair of hands that were like that,
And if they could talk, oh my what a chat!
One pair of hands my Grandmother did have,
So many times I watched her rub on Pain King Salve.
She needed to soften her hands from the day's toil.
Many a day she worked her garden soil.
A hoe you see knows no gender,
Man or woman the handle is not slender.
It just takes a solid grip to rip out the weeds,
Or open a furrow to plant some seeds.
Yet at days end when the chores were done,
She'd rub on the salve to prepare for the grandson.
Into her lap I would jump and wait for the words,
Sweet songs of Jesus as beautiful as birds.
My Granddad was tough as nails,
I've watched him repair many fence rails.
His grip on the hammer was firm and straight,
The nail head the target simply waited its fate.
I watched his hands milk the cows in their stall,
They never balked at his touch and gave milk to all.
His hands picked berries at the blackberry patch,
Scratched to pieces from that thorny thatch.
Yet when those hands would pick me up,
They were kind and gentle like handling a pup.
Now I know both pair of hands are working for God,
For He places people in just the right job.
My grand folks were there for me always,
With loving hands to guide my growing days.
For those loving hands God, you gave me a start,
I hope my hands are also connected to my heart.
