Naval career well worth it
Contributed by: Bob Rotruck on 11/2/2007

I spent twenty years in the Naval Service, retiring on July 31, 1979 as a Chief Warrant Officer (W3). I loved my career and the Naval Service. Had I not had children that were growing up, I would have stayed for thirty years. I think one of the most unique and memorable things in those twenty years was all of the wonderful men and women I had the opportunity to work for, work with, and worked for me. We hear many bad things in the press about our nation's young people, but let me assure you that in the hundreds of officers and sailors that I encountered in my career, there were only a couple of bad apples. I feel very blessed that I had the opportunity to serve with very distinguished citizens of this United States through the Vietnam War and peace time and they all made me proud to say I was an American and a United States Serviceman.

What makes a person stay in a career that takes them away from their loved ones and home for months on end? I think the answer is simple: love of God and Country. We have a way of life in this country that is the envy of the world and it is worth laying your life on the line to sustain. I watched sailors do heroic feats in just their day to day jobs. From aircraft pilots to mechanics, technicians, parachute riggers to the butter dipper in the chow line. Each person doing their job to the best of their ability and never questioning an order no matter what time of day or night or how mundane! Giving their all! Why? It certainly wasn't for the money or notoriety. It is simply because they swore to uphold the Constitution of the United States and to follow the orders of those appointed over them in their chain of command.

Would I do it again? In a heart beat and never look back. Thank you America for giving me the opportunity to serve Lady Liberty and this great nation.
