Carole Murray

Age: Not given

My family: I'm married to Lisle Gates, principal of Castle View High School. I have two daughters and he has two sons and a daughter, who have brought us six grandchildren so far.

Education: Undergraduate degree

What I do: Currently, I'm the legislative liaison for the Douglas County School District. I fight to help them stay on top of their game by keeping an eye on legislation affecting the educational world.

My favorite place in town to hang out: My back deck in Castle Rock, enjoying the privilege of living in Douglas County, Colorado. Has anyone noticed there are no mosquitoes this year?

What I like most about living here: Enjoying a caring community in an incredibly beautiful setting. Life is so good here.

My interests and hobbies: There are a couple of things, besides politics and government! Gardening, travel, reading almost anything, and having CSPAN on in the background when I'm preparing a meal or working around the house.

My favorite thing to cook: Chicken piccata, one of my daughter's favorites.

People who inspired me (and how): I attended a parochial elementary school, and I read every book on the lives of the saints. I think their gentleness, combined with a toughness that comes from strongly held beliefs had more of an impact than I've ever realized. My parents were great examples of these traits. Children of the depression and war who rebuilt our country one family at a time.

How I have contributed to the community: I was Douglas County Clerk and Recorder for 8 years, leading my staff to continually improve the efficiency and quality of service in that office. Previously, I was the head of the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce, working with local businesses to build a dynamic local economy and a sense of community among many newcomers to the area. Before that, I was the advertising manager for the local newspaper.

The biggest issues facing State House District 45 now: As in the rest of the country, we're all being affected by the price of gas. We need to have reasonable limits on the exploration of our state energy resources, but we need to use those resources! The strength of a country is gauged by its access to natural resources and the creativity and work ethic of its people. We must unleash both.

Our health care system needs to be unwound and reinvented. It's broken, and the only way to fix it is to bring all the interests to the table to rewrite the way we do business. I have a strong history in this type of "setting the table for change," and see that it is so necessary in healthcare. The doctors, the hospitals, the pharmaceutical companies, the insurance companies can be brought together to simplify and vastly improve the system.

My philosophy is one based on less government and low taxes.

Why I am running: As clerk and recorder, I learned that I had personal skills and interests that "worked" in the legislative setting. I served as legislative co-chair, and then president of the Colorado County Clerks' Association, and used those skills. As I've spent time at the legislature in my current employment, I've gained an interest in using those talents as one of the policy-makers. I've been in Douglas County for 30 years, and have it in my head AND my heart to serve my neighbors at the state level.
