Romancing the Arts a hit in Castle Rock

Hundreds of Douglas County art lovers have enjoyed "Romancing the Arts," the third annual juried art exhibit by the Greater Castle Rock Art Guild, at the Philip S. Miller Library in Castle Rock.

At the opening reception Feb. 10, visitors were treated to art demonstrations in a number of disciplines by community artists as well as the 104 works of art displayed. The work judged 'best of show' was a painting by Carol Nelson titled "Influence of Principles." Other judged winners included, in two-dimensional art:
1st Place: Mixed Fare by Ed McCarthy Allen - Egg Tempera
2nd Place: Along the Stream by Rick Young - Oil
3rd Place: Space Commander - Dix Morris - Pastels

In three-dimensional art:
1st Place: Summer Friends by Janene DiRico Cable - Bronze
2nd Place: Crystal Mill by Wayne Smith - Brass sculpture
3rd Place: Wingsby Frank R. Morris - Walnut Sculpture
Honorable Mentions:
Fritz Anders - A Hare Raising Experience - Woodburning
Daniel Branine - Ross - Clay
Anne Astrella Buel - An Eastern Feeling - Fiber Art
Deborah Fuelberth - Her Own Style - Oil
Evette Goldstein - Romeo & Juliet 1 & 2 - gold, ink, paint
Bruce Makinney - Gull - Acrylic
Kenneth Pederson - Purple Martini - Enamel & Acrylic
J.B. Sullivan - Tugi - Graphite, Colored Pencil
Nancy Yarrison - Single Tree - Bronze

People's choice awards were also announced Feb. 10, including Wayne Smith of Castle Rock for his brass sculpture "Crystal Mill," and Lenora Giblin, of Castle Rock, for her acrylic painting, "St. Peter's."

Artists participating included Ed McCarthy Allen, Fritz Anders, Daniel Branine, Carol Broere, Colette Brooks, Anne Astrella Buel, Janene DiRico Cable, Christine Chandler, Tammy DeBakey, Jon Dirks, Ed Dyson, Deborah Fuelberth, Dave Gill, Evette Goldstein, Julie Holladay, Chris Holroyd, Rand Hood, Pam Hostetler, Ji Ill Kim, Rosemarie Lohnert, Becky Lucas, Bruce Makinney, Donna Martin, Mary Mellot, Kathy Meyer, Dix Morris, Frank Morris, Drew Nelson, Susan Nelson, Kenneth Pederson, Vivienne Perkins, Maggie Rosche, Tina Rowe, Joy Schultz, Ronald Sell, J.B. Sullivan, Julie Woods, Kenneth Worley, Nancy Harrison, Rick Young and Patricia A. Zoghby.

Besides additional future exhibits, Second Saturday is the title of town art walks that are planned with local businesses in May, June, July and August in Castle Rock. The more than 150 members of the guild welcome new artists and meet every third Thursday at Castle View High School, 5254 N. Meadows Drive, Castle Rock from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
