The countdown has begun, at least for 9 town kids getting ready for the 2006 Douglas County Fair and Rodeo. At the Lowell Ranch Ben Weinroth is participating in a market goat project. Jessica Greene, Megan McCullough and Lucas McCullough are participating in the market hogs project. Finally, Grace Kennedy, Katie McCullough, Shane Northern, Zach Northern, Cassidy Lawson and Maggie Weinroth are participating in the sheep project.
However for these youth the beginning of fair marks the end of a summer spent at the Lowell Ranch. All of these kids don't own 100 acre ranches, or for that matter even a couple of acres. Some live in Founders, others in the Memmens subdivision. John and Bea Lowell have allowed these youth the opportunity to participate in the fair with livestock even though they live in town. The Lowells have allowed these kids to come out once or twice a day to take care of their animals. This is all though C.A.L.F., the Colorado Agricultural Leadership Foundation.
However don't think these 'city slickers' don't know a thing or two about livestock. The C.A.L.F. participants proudly boast of last year's Grand Champion Sr. Swine Showman, Reserve Grand Champion Int. Sheep Showman, 4 lambs in the Grand Champion Drive, six Jr. Livestock Sale qualifiers, and the Reserve Grand Champion Market lamb overall.
All of these kids have to drive out daily to feed and exercise their animals in the hope of earning their spot in the Jr. Livestock sale. Ben Weinroth, 8, tells why he is raising goats, "This year I hoped to have fun and hope Mario [my goat] does his best."
So come see the CALF kids at the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo, and ask one of them how you too can raise livestock, even if you live in town. Maybe next year you will be a champion at the fair!

The Douglas County Fair is always a reminder of our country roots here in the middle of tract homes and strip malls. Thanks for participating. We'll have to stop by and see those goats this year.
