Crayfish or crawdaddy? Chatfield catch o' the day.
Contributed by: Barbara Neff on 6/23/2007

We spent a lot of time at Chatfield Reservoir this week.

My son, Carson, almost nine, discovered a crawfish (as they say in these parts--"crawdaddy" where I come from) when it darted from underneath a big rock he picked up in shallow water.

The hunt was on.

Carson spent hours trying first to figure out where crayfish lurk (under big rocks in not more than a foot of water) and how to catch them (they dart backwards when startled, even into a waiting net).

Primitive hunting instinct took over and my son had wrangled no fewer than a dozen of the lobster-looking creatures into a cooler by day's end. Though I pleaded he return them to their watery home upon our departure, he desperately wished to bring a few home to keep in an old hermit crab tank going unused in our garage for the purpose of showing off his catches of the day.

I cannot say I am tickled with the new pets. But, I do admire Carson for his determination in capturing the creatures and his ability to find joy in simple things, such as crawdaddy hunting.

Barbara... Do you know how much they cost at the supermarket? They're not even "fresh" (already cooked). Next time you visit the store (like WalMart), check out the price, get a recipe and the seasoning packets (easier than buying all the seasonings separate) and take Carson back to Chatfield for more "Crawfish Hunting". You'll be sending him back quite often after trying these "miniature lobster tails"... (SM<"LE)

Mick, sigh of relief. I persuaded my son to release the new pets back into Chatfield this afternoon. If crawdads can look surprised or thankful, those did.

In Michigan they were always crayfish. My parents let me keep the snakes, turtles, frogs, etc., that we found, only rule being none in the house. We had a "clubhouse" in the barn.
