We were in the eleventh hour.It is the night before the Soaring Hawk Elementary School Wild West Pumpkin Fest and we are decorating, trying to fill the remaining volunteer spots, waiting for the pumpkins to be delivered, separating all the prizes and candy, etc... We are filled with the normal anxiety every event planner feels the night before their event takes place.
Then we got the call - the "no pumpkins" call.
Zoe Gibbs
, our pumpkin gal had just heard from the farmer that due to the pumpkin shortage this year and an immigration crackdown and this and that , he would not be delivering the $1,000 worth of pumpkins we had ordered. It was 4 p.m. which was coincidentally also the estimated time of arrival of the pumpkins when we got the call. In fairness to the famer, he did say that we could come and pick them up.
It would have only been 3 hours up, an hour to load, 3 hours down and an hour to unload. It is fair to say that our anxiety level was anything but normal at this time. Zoe and I hung up agreeing that she would make some calls and keep in touch. I continued decorating, although with a little less zest.
I was the chairperson and in my mind this was going down in history as
Laura's
Pumpkinless PumpkinFest.
Lisa Freeseman
, one of the decorators, looked at me with such pity and with tremendous kindness offered me a set of Broncos tickets that we could raffle off at the festival. We have no pumpkins BUT we have Broncos tickets!!
It was a valiant effort to save my reputation that was about to be smashed like the pumpkins we didn't have. Zoe was not having a lot of luck. This place had just closed, that place wanted too much money, the next place said their pumpkins were rotting and King Soopers was waiting to talk to a manager. At 8:30pm, Lisa,
Kamela
Pancroft
and I collapsed on the school floor and started to eat some pizza when Zoe walked in to let us know that Castle Rock King Soopers was coming to our rescue. She has a "date" with the produce guys at 7a.m. Wow.
These guys absolutely saved the day for us, never mind my reputation!! More importantly, they made a difference for all the young children that would be frolicking in our pumpkin patch in just a few hours.
Rob Burd
, a Soaring Hawk dad was at King Soopers with his flatbed truck and Zoe, closing the deal at 7a.m.. We cannot thank the super King Soopers produce guys enough. From the bottom of our hearts - Thank you
Russ Oliver
,
Brett Marks
and
Eric Berggren
. Your assistance and willingness to help really exemplifies the Castle Rock community spirit.
Next time you're out picking up a head of lettuce or a pumpkin, please say hello to these guys. We are lucky to have them in our neighborhood.

Great story! I love the lego family! BTW, it is 10/30, and I was at KS this evening. One day to the BIG DAY and even they are OUT of pumpkins! Timing is everything!
