Hiking for the cause! You can help!
Contributed by: Kathy Chavez on 2/22/2008

Hike for Discovery is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's new fundraising program that prepares folks, from beginners to seasoned hikers, to experience a natural wonder in a very special way.

Some of you may remember that I am an avid hiker. Last year my son and I completed the thru-hike of the Colorado Trail (almost 500 miles!). In July, I will be hiking the John Muir Trail in Yosemite (225 miles), but the most important thing I am doing this summer is hiking for a cause.

I'll be hiking many, many hours--and steep miles--to prepare for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Hike for Discovery, an adventure in the Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado set for June of this year. My goal is to be prepared enough to make it to the top of Long's Peak. This is very important to me because I will be doing something that I love, hiking, and also fundraising for something I believe in.

I've set my goal to raise at least $2500 to help find a cure for blood cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and Hodgkin's disease. Presently, my father has a very slow progressing form of myeloma.

He is doing well and because of his age and where he is at with this disease, he is not being treated but being 'watched' by his doctor. Additionally, my step-son has been in remission for several years having had a childhood form of leukemia. He is one of the lucky ones. An estimated 110,960 new cases of blood cancers will be diagnosed nationwide this year alone; some 55,100 patients will die.

This is where, I'm hoping, you--the reader--come in. Though I can do the hiking, I need your help to reach my fundraising goal. The money I raise will pay for support groups, educational programs, and financial planning for afflicted families. Every dollar you donate is tax deductible, and at least 75 cents of money spent by LLS goes directly toward research and patient services.

Think of it as a Valentine you're sending those involved in blood cancer research, or those hoping for a cure, or in honor of those you've know with a blood cancer.

Please check out my website--in cooperation with LLS-- and read all about the program. I would appreciate very much if you would support this cause by donating any amount of money you can afford. You can donate (to support my fundraising) on-line at www.active.com/donate/hfdrm/hfdKChavez . Your donation is 100% tax deductible. Your support is appreciated.
