Michael Booth - Castle Rock, Co. 80108
Dear Sir or Madam;
My name is Michael Booth and the intent of this letter is to ask your support in my effort to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.
About My Project:
The Lowell Ranch located in Castle Rock, Co. The Lowell Ranch is a non-profit ranch that is one of the primary facilities in Douglas County for 4 H activities. Long time Douglas County residents John and Bea Lowell provided the root stock for the creation of CALF. In 2002 the Lowell's established the Lowell Family Foundation and in December 2002 CALF was created as the non-profit entity to manage the activity at the Lowell Ranch on Plum Creek.
Making a Difference for Kids:
CALF touches the youth of Front Range Colorado by providing opportunities to learn while experiencing farming and ranching activities that form the heritage of Colorado.
Currently the younger siblings who participate in activities there play around the ranch during meetings. Although supervised, the large expanse is not safe without adequate containment or more adults to supervise them. My project is to construct a white picket fence around the play area to provide an area which is safe and easily controlled for the kids to play in.
Having been in 4H for 3 years I chose the Lowell Ranch fencing and improvement project as my Eagle endeavor to give back to both the community and my 4 H organization. The fenced area will be approximately 2,000 square feet on the east side of the classroom which will include a storage bench for play items.
About Me:
I am the first boy on both sides of my family to ever be involved in Scouting or 4 H.. My brother Travis just crossed over from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts on March 7, 2008. In addition, my troop leaders and family have done some diversity research and believe that if I achieve the rank of Eagle Scout I may very well be the first African American to achieve Eagle Scout in Castle Rock, Co. and maybe even in Douglas County, Co. The Scout archives show that the first African American Eagle Scout came from Texas in 1926. After that point the history of Scouting becomes a little vague as to the ethnic background and achievements of Scouts.
Next year I will be a Senior at Castle View High School and am in fact one of the first members of the CVHS football team. (# 72 Defensive End & Defensive Tackle) My days are filled with school & sports focused efforts including homework and on the weekends I work part time. I was a member of the Cherry Valley Renegades 4 H club for 3 years. I've been involved with Scouting since my family moved to Castle Rock, Colorado in 1994.
For over 10 years my mom drove me around to scout meetings, helped sew on my patches and helped and encouraged me to continue through a multitude of scout activity. My dad spent countless hours, days & nights hiking with the troop through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Camp Tahosa, sleeping on the ground and even teaching us scouts some things like Indian Lore and Wilderness survival. Sleeping in a tent and helping to stand watch late at night while us scouts slept soundly in our tents with the troop.
At this point, dad says he couldn't be more proud of me if I were a member of the Tuskegee Airmen.
Now it's time for me to give back to my family and the community that has helped me over all these years.
About your Involvement:
The estimated cost to complete this project is $3,000.00 to purchase the material and equipment which will be used to complete the project. At the completion of the project a commemorative plaque will be attached to the fence indicating the project's origins, meanings and the contributors to this effort.
Volunteers in the form of Scouts, friends and family will assist me in the construction of this fencing project at the Lowell Ranch.
Summary:
This project is only a part of the total requirement in pursuing Eagle Scout. However, this part which involves giving back to the community is very important and most significant in the big picture of our community.
