4-H announces 2008 scholarship winners

The Douglas County 4-H Program provides several scholarship opportunities to members every year. Members who are high school seniors or currently enrolled college students with a cumulative 2.5 GPA, and who show leadership and commitment to 4-H, are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

They include the 4-H Foundation Scholarship, 4-H Council Scholarship, Horse Committee Scholarship, Stuart Mazanec Scholarship, and a new one for 2008, the Community Service Scholarship.

Winner of the 4-H Foundation Scholarship and receiving $2,500:

Katie McCullough

Katie, daughter of John and Stephanie McCullough of Castle Rock, is a 10 year Douglas County 4-H veteran. She was involved in a variety of projects including market lambs, breeding sheep, leadership, horse, and gardening. She also earned several awards in livestock and meats judging, finding her passion with the latter. Katie credits her involvement with the meats judging team as the most significant experience in preparing her for college. She plans to attend Texas Tech and major in Animal Science with a concentration in Meat Science/International Agriculture.

Winners of the Douglas County 4-H Council Scholarship and receiving $1000 each:

Tayelor Blanchard

Tayelor is the daughter of Ed and Amy Blanchard of Larkspur. She has been involved in 4-H for 13 years and has taken several projects including sheep, clothing, dog, foods, and rocketry. Her activities included meats judging, livestock judging, and the Exchange program. Tayelor states that 4-H has been "a huge part" of her life and helped provide extensive leadership opportunities. She plans to attend Hutchison Community College and major in Business Marketing with a concentration in Communications.

Biz McManus

Biz McManus, daughter of Debbie and Steve McManus of Franktown, is currently attending Colorado State University as an Animal Science major with a second major in Agriculture Business. She was a 4-H member for nine years and completed a wide variety of projects including market steers, breeding beef, roping, vet science, photography, and foods. Biz states that her involvement in 4-H livestock projects strongly influenced her career goal of working in the agriculture industry. Biz plans to continue attending CSU.

Sara McManus

Sara is the daughter of Debbie and Steve McManus of Franktown. She just completed attendance at Seward County Community College and plans to attend Colorado State University next school year. Her major is in Animal Science with a second major in Agriculture Business. Sara was involved in 4-H for 8 years and completed projects like market beef, horse, cake decorating, and veterinary science. She feels fortunate that she grew up in a community that takes pride in its agricultural roots and is excited to pursue a career in the ag industry.

Taylor Moudy

Taylor Moudy is the son of David and Shannon Moudy of Castle Rock. Taylor is a five year 4-H member and completed photography, leather craft and dog projects. His primary interest was shooting sports, and he participated in several state and county events. Taylor won the 2007 Dan Forth "I Dare You" award and states that his "entire 4-H career involvement contributed to being worthy of the award". Taylor plans to commission as an officer in the United State Marine Corps and pursue a career as a pilot.

Kylie Osterloh

In addition to the council scholarship, Kylie, daughter of Thomas and Marti Laule of Castle Rock, also received a $500 Horse Committee Scholarship. She is a seven year 4-H member and focused on horse projects and activities, including several horse shows, the horse judging team, the hippology team and horse bowl. Kylie states 4-H taught her responsibility and how to stick to something over a long period of time, and that she most enjoyed working with younger members. She plans to attend Texas Christian University in the fall and major in Neuroscience with an emphasis in pre-medical. Her second major is Spanish.

Katlin Sanderson

Katlin, daughter of James and Theresa Sanderson of Franktown, is a five year member of 4-H. In addition to the council scholarship, she was also awarded the $500 Horse Committee Scholarship. Her primary focus in 4-H has been on horse projects and activities, including hippology and horse bowl. She earned several top awards both as an individual and as a team member. Katlin states that her most valuable experience in 4-H has been learning to be a leader and also that 4-H has taught her that community service is a great part of life. She plans to attend Colorado State University and major in equine science with an emphasis in veterinary medicine.

Stephanie Spencer

Stephanie is the daughter of Todd and Debbie Spencer of Castle Rock. A former 10 year Douglas County 4-H member, Stephanie focused on market and breeding sheep projects earning several top honors. She also served in leadership roles in her club, participated in several demonstrations, and completed community service activities. Stephanie states that 4-H helped shape her into an "independent, responsible, and motivated individual". Stephanie just completed her freshman year at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and is majoring in Health Care Science.

Ashley Streightiff

Ashley is the daughter of Allen and Jennie Streightiff of Franktown. A nine year member of 4-H, Ashley was involved in several projects including clothing, photography, home environment, and finance. She entered the talent show several years and was the president and treasurer of her 4-H club. Ashley currently attends the University of North Dakota and is working to establish a collegiate 4-H club there. Her major is physical therapy, and she eventually plans to earn a doctorate in the field.

Courtney Tracy

Courtney, daughter of Jean and Jerry Tracy of Franktown, has been a 4-H member for 10 years. In addition to earning the council scholarship, she was also awarded the Stuart Mazanec Scholarship and the Community Service Scholarship, each for $1,000. She completed a variety of 4-H projects including global citizenship, child development, poultry, shooting sports, dairy goat, and her primary passion, rabbits. Courtney states that through 4-H she has come to love doing community service and helping others and feels she developed strong communication skills through various 4-H demonstrations and activities. Courtney plans to attend Kansas State University and major in elementary education with an emphasis on first grade. Her second major is art-photography.

Morgen Weatherly

Morgen Weatherly is the daughter of Allen and Milou Weatherly of Franktown. An 11-year Douglas County 4-H veteran, Morgen took a variety of projects including market sheep and hogs, sewing, archery, and cake decorating among others. She received several awards, took leadership roles in her clubs, and was involved in a variety of activities including speech and debate. Morgen credits 4-H with teaching her a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility as well as a strong sense of community. She currently attends Colorado State University as a chemistry major.

Winners of the Horse Committee Scholarship and receiving $500 each:

Kylie Osterloh and Katlin Sanderson - see descriptions above. Horse scholarships are awarded to high school seniors who not only meet the normal scholarship requirements, but also show an outstanding horse record throughout their 4-H career.

Winner of the Stuart Mazanec Scholarship and receiving $1,000:

Courtney Tracy - see description above. Recipients of this award must meet the normal scholarship requirements and must also demonstrate at least three years involvement in shooting sports.

Winner of the new Community Service Scholarship and receiving $1,000:

Courtney Tracy - see description above. Recipients earn this award based on community service contribution through the 4-H program.
