Farmers market makes summer debut
Contributed by: Joseph Kirchmer/YourHub.com on 7/16/2008

The Castle Rock farmers market unveiled a new fresh market approach at its season opening July 12.

The 21st annual Plum Creek Valley Farmers' Market, which is held this year at Festival Park on the corner of Second and Perry streets, features more than just fruits and vegetables, said Maryjo Woodrick, administrative secretary of Douglas County's Colorado State University Extension Office. The annual summer tradition also features live entertainment, 17 more vendors and a greater variety of products, including organic beef and bison, she said.

"It's quite a bit bigger this year," Woodrick said. "We've always had a good following and hopefully, the new location and the new vendors will add to that following."

The market moved from its previous location at 190 S. Wilcox St. because the dirt lot there quickly became muddy after rainstorms and was difficult to access for the elderly and the handicapped, she said.

"This also makes it a more central location for residents," she said. "It has more of a downtown feel."

Organizers with the Plum Creek Valley Farmers' Market require all of the produce to be grown in Colorado, she said. Most of the produce comes from farms near Palisade, Platteville and Pueblo, she said.

There are also some local vendors from Castle Rock. Thelma Minney's booth Sandy Acres sells honey, jams and jellies and Mary Worford's Mary Green Jeans' booth offers vinegars and herbs.

Members of the Greater Castle Rock Artists' Guild will be on hand every other week to display their art and help kids with art projects.

The farmers market will be held every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon through Oct. 4. Visit www.coloradofarmers.org for more information.
