Reece Anthony Rubino
is a fighter.
The 2-year-old Castle Rock boy, who was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, Type 1, (SMA) at 3 months old, was not expected to live past the age of 2. But he has defied expectations.
Children with SMA Type 1 rarely roll and never sit up by themselves, and are often limited to a life expectancy of 2 years old or less. Rubino, however, continues to improve in activities such as holding a ball, turning his head, lifting his arm, swallowing pureed foods and even breathing on his own 12 hours a day, said
Bob Lowry
, an organizer for the third annual Reece's Roundup event.
The annual fundraiser and 5K run/1-mile walk, which will be held July 26 at Butterfield Crossing Park, 3952 Butterfield Crossing Drive, in Castle Rock, helps cover the monthly $3,000 in medical costs it takes to keep Reece alive, Lowry said.
Reece's parents,
Jeff
and
Lesa Rubino
, will continue the benefit after Reece passes, he said, to help benefit other children with SMA Type 1.
