Reece's Roundup to benefit Castle Rock boy
Contributed by: Joseph Kirchmer/YourHub.com on 7/16/2008

Reece Anthony Rubino is a fighter.

The 2-year-old Castle Rock boy, who was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, Type 1, (SMA) at 3 months old, was not expected to live past the age of 2. But he has defied expectations.

Children with SMA Type 1 rarely roll and never sit up by themselves, and are often limited to a life expectancy of 2 years old or less. Rubino, however, continues to improve in activities such as holding a ball, turning his head, lifting his arm, swallowing pureed foods and even breathing on his own 12 hours a day, said Bob Lowry, an organizer for the third annual Reece's Roundup event.

The annual fundraiser and 5K run/1-mile walk, which will be held July 26 at Butterfield Crossing Park, 3952 Butterfield Crossing Drive, in Castle Rock, helps cover the monthly $3,000 in medical costs it takes to keep Reece alive, Lowry said.

Reece's parents, Jeff and Lesa Rubino, will continue the benefit after Reece passes, he said, to help benefit other children with SMA Type 1.
