I am one of those lucky people who work at a Haunted House. I have the opportunity each night to do makeup and costumes for 20 plus actors. This might seem a bit odd, but I really enjoy it.
I work at the 13 th DOOR HAUNTED HOUSE (I-225 and Tamarac Parkway) as well as CURSE OF SLAUGHTERHOUSE GULCH (it's sister haunt located next door). Each night around 6:00pm the dedicated actors walk in and discard their 21 st Century cloths and put on the costumes of the various characters they will be playing. I then have the challenge of transforming them, through the use of prosthetics and makeup, into the tortured souls they are to play that evening.
Haunted Houses seemed like a nature fit for me. Ever since I was a little girl I enjoyed going to haunted houses. In fact, I would come home and transform my bedroom into the scariest haunted house a kid could think of. I would then invite my neighbors over to "get scared". Then there is the fact that I have always enjoyed working with makeup. You put the two together and it's the perfect combination for a Haunted House make-up person. Being able to put these two loves of mine together is probably why Halloween is one of my favorite holidays of the year.
Each of the Haunted Houses I work at tells a different story, so the makeup needs for each character are different. At SLAUGHTERHOUSE GULCH I am working with characters like Jason, Freddy, Mike Myers, Saw and the Ring girl who is very creepy. I have to mix makeup with latex pieces to give the character the desired scary effect.
For the 13 th DOOR each of the characters is suppose to have been a victim of the Barrington Hotel fire, set by the owners' nephew, Andrew Barrington. For these characters I use makeup that makes them looked decomposed with a freshly charred look. Fake blood over the wounds gives each victim the perfect finish.
If you want to see some of the creepiest and scariest characters, I invite you to come over and see my "masterpieces". They are on display the entire month of October. You can find out more information about the haunted houses I work at and others in the Denver metro area by going to
