Haunting Memories of All-Hallow's Eve
Contributed by: Anthonette Klinkerman on 10/20/2007

My Halloween memories are fond ones: The scent of fireplaces on a crisp night. The little plastic pumpkin for collecting candy that even empty continued to smell of chocolate.

Losing my eyebrows one time to makeup glue that was a tad too strong. When we got to dress up at school and have a costume parade, and my best friend went as the movie poster from "Jaws". My dad figuring a skill saw could expedite the pumpkin-carving process.

My little one is going as a tiger this year. Her costume is an import from England as that was the only place I could find one. Yes, I'm one of those moms, willing to traverse the 'Net in search of the right costume.

As far back as August there was suddenly a run on tiger costumes, and as it turned out, the folks across the pond had a really nice selection. Was Johnny Depp in some tiger movie?

Our yearly plans include Boo at the Zoo, and Trick-or-Treating with the neighbors. This has to be my favorite time of year for all the innocent fun and cherished memories the season evokes.

Halloween conjures up for me images of ghosts and jack-o-lanterns, black cats and witches, costumes and candy. Still. I say "still" because 1) I'm a kid at heart (a major requirement for teaching middle school), and 2) I can't keep track of the non-secular images I am supposed to resort to in these oh-so-politically correct times.

Halloween may have some dubious origins, but it has become an American tradition. It is the second most popular holiday for a majority of people to decorate their house and yard. It's fun. It's about childhood. It's about dressing up and being someone different for a night. Don't grown people go to Vegas for this same reason?

Now if only I can find the artist that painted my daughter's face at Ocktoberfest. Then she's guaranteed to keep her eyebrows.
