Small town, big fun on the Fourth
Contributed by: Anthonette Klinkerman on 6/16/2007

"Come on down and get some Middle America on ya'!"

Now that was an invitation I couldn't refuse, especially considering the source, my friend and colleague, John McKinney. What he was referring to was attending the annual Sedalia Fourth of July Parade.

Last year, we met at John's house, and walked over to the street the parade route follows. There was a modest crowd, and John explained that usually the procession goes around twice because of its small size.

The parade consists of local businesses and political personalities, the fire department, and anybody else who gets their vehicle in line.

The McKinney family brought along buckets filled with water balloons that had been in the refrigerator overnight. "It turns into a giant water-fight," they offered.

I wasn't certain what to expect, but was informed by the "veterans" that you go "armed" with some type of water-flinging device. And you go prepared to gather candy thrown from the floats, after a good hosing from the riders, of course.

We did indeed get wet, my then two-year-old daughter taking a near-direct hit. The crowd "booed" its disapproval at the unspoken foul of nailing someone under three feet tall, and apologies ensued.

My toddler was so incredulous at the sweets she had retrieved moments before that I don't think she even noticed she was soaking wet.

Still being unfamiliar with the proceedings, my friend, Kate Savage, informed us after the parade that it was time to go scavenging. Part of the fun is combing the streets after the procession, picking up still-edible candy others have overlooked.

It is a great time for everyone, and later in the evening when the skies are dark, Sedalia puts on its own fireworks show. The fire department stands at the ready, in case any errant fireworks need dowsing.

You know where to find my family again on Independence Day. This kind of entertainment is too good to pass up.

We're going to be running the annual Palmer Lake to Monument 4 mile run on the 4th, another great local tradition!
