MLK, Jr. Unity Walk: Breaking the Silence

Sunday, January 15, will mark the 12th anniversary of the MLK Unity Walk, held in Highlands Ranch, to honor the work and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The 1.7 mile walk will begin at 2 p.m. at Fox Creek Elementary (6585 Collegiate Drive) and end at Highlands Ranch High School (9375 Cresthill Lane). Parking is provided at Highlands Ranch High School and nearby Cresthill Middle School, with free shuttle service available from the high school to Fox Creek from 1-2 p.m.

An hour-long program is planned at the high school following the walk. Reverend Gilbert Caldwell will deliver the keynote address. Reverend Caldwell is a United Methodist Minister and a member of the Board of  Scholars and Preachers of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Chapel at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.

Refreshments will be provided, and participants will enjoy a performance by the acclaimed Black Hand Drummers. Their performance includes African drumming, exciting dancing, song and storytelling with African American spirituals.

The Douglas County school with the most students participating in the walk will win a free all-school performance by the Black Hand Drummers. This annual event is organized by the MLK, Jr. Unity Alliance and is supported by the Douglas County School District Multicultural Alliance and local businesses.
