MLK mural unveiled at SHARE Colorado
Contributed by: SHARE Colorado on 1/16/2006

DENVER -- AmeriCorps, Learn and Serve, Senior Corps Members and Alumni honored Dr. King by designing and painting a conceptual mural for SHARE Colorado’s lobby, which is located at 9360 Federal Blvd.

This project took shape after one of AmeriCorps VISTA leaders Jennifer Leao visited the SHARE’s website and found the mural idea located under its wish list section.

The project started over the weekend and is scheduled to be completed on Martin Luther King Day. Over 100 volunteers came together these past three days to hand-paint a mural with scenes that portray the process of SHARE. It begins with the food growing in farm fields and leads all the way to the point where the volunteers are handing out the pre-purchased SHARE grocery packages to participants.

SHARE is a nonprofit program within Catholic Charities which is run much like a food co-op and offers quality food, including fresh fruits and vegetables, to everyone at a reduced price. What SHARE is best known for is its commitment to strengthening communities by encouraging volunteerism.

"We saw this as a time to get others involved in their community and what better way to help an organization that serves people of all ages and backgrounds," said Leao. "The best way for people to learn about Dr. King’s legacy is to get involved themselves."

"It is perfect that it was done by volunteers who gave of their natural talents so graciously in the effort to help others, because that is what SHARE is all about. We really appreciate all the hard work that went into this project."

SHARE is encouraging anyone who would like to come and see this wonderful mural to stop by Mon-Fri. 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

If you would like more information on the AmeriCorps national day of service visit www.mlkday.org or to find out more on SHARE Colorado visit www. sharecolorado.com or call 303-428-0400.
