Conrad Moschel, killed by Indians
Contributed by: Michael Rule on 5/15/2007

The recent article on rock climbing in Castlewood Canyon brought to my mind this bit of local history in the same area.

On August 21, 1864 Conrad Moschel, aged 30 years, was killed by native American Indians just south of Castlewood Canyon. A gravestone marks the spot of his burial, and an inscription on the rock wall above it commemorates the occasion.

To reach this historic site, take Hwy 86 east towards Franktown from Castle Rock. Just before you reach the intersection of Hwy 83 (about 1/4 mile), go south on Castlewood Canyon Rd. Go through the park, past the old dam, and continue about another mile. The gravesite will be on your right, across from the old ranch in the valley to your left.

Look for the inscription on the cliff above the road. The gravestone itself is partially hidden by some native shrubs, so you need to look carefully.

There were many conflicts between the native Americans and the settlers. There is something poignant about finding this grave, tucked away in such a beautiful area.

To make a round trip of it, continue on Castlewood Canyon Rd. until you reach the intersection of Lake Gulch Rd. Turn right (west) and this road will take you back into Castle Rock!

This gravesite is on private property, so please be respectful.

Gordy, I agree 100%. A grave was found of a native american on Table Mesa (near the Douglas County/ ElPaso County line)by settlers years ago and taken to a museum at the Garden of the Gods. That is WRONG. I believe we should respect all gravesites and massacre sites. Sand Creek being set aside as a memorial is at least a start. thanks for your input.
