Melodrama Auditions April 28
Contributed by: Aspen Walker on 4/19/2007

Come one, come all, the Indian Park School House Association (IPSHA) is holding auditions for their July melodrama from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 28 at the Sprucewood Inn (491 South Highway 67, approximately 13 miles southwest of Sedalia, up Jarre Canyon). Participants will read from the script, The Ballad of Gopher Gulch. The melodrama will be performed on July 21 and 22 at the Indian Park School House, and on July 28 and 29 at Deckers Hall. All ages are encouraged to participate. IPSHA is also seeking talented individuals for "olio" talent highlights between the acts of the melodrama. Olio performers can try out on April 28, or call 303-688-8357 to book an audition on a different day.

Head nine miles west of Sedalia and you'll discover a remarkable relic of yesterday's one-room schooling system nestled in the Ponderosa Pines. For over 120 years the historic Indian Park School House has been home to youthful laughter and neighborhood camaraderie. The building is listed on the Colorado and National registers of Historic Places. School's out, but the building continues to serve as the hub of the mountain community. Beloved as it is, the Schoolhouse is showing its age.

IPSHA is organizing the melodrama as a fundraiser to pay for the extensive restoration required for the aging school house. Additionally, the state Historical Fund just awarded IPSHA $40,822 for repairs to the foundation, walls and floors. The Alice Gist Dunaway Foundation also just presented $5000 to IPSHA (for the second time in three years,) for the restoration. The Canyon Quilters are creating and donating a one-of-a-kind quilt in benefit of the school house restoration. The quilt will be available for purchase at the silent auction at Sedalia's annual July 4 festivities. Several skilled and generous community members are donating labor for the school house restoration project.

IPSHA is also partnering with the Sedalia History Museum for the melodrama production. The museum will sell concessions at the performances to raise funds for the museum, and their efforts to relocate a local vintage house to downtown Sedalia to house the museum. For more information about the museum, call 303-688-3571.

A melodrama is a theatrical genre that was particularly popular in the nineteenth century, when the school house was built. Melodramas are highly dramatic, encourage audience involvement, and feature stock characters like the noble hero, the long-suffering heroine, and the hard-hearted villain. Melodramas center around justice, and usually end with virtue triumphing over vice.
