Graduate to pursue career in Merchant Marine

Midshipman George L. Matthews of, Castle Rock, graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York, on June 16 with 213 members of the class of 2008.

Matthews earned a Bachelor of Science in Logistics and Intermodal Transportation with a concentration in Ethics and Leadership, and received a U.S. Coast Guard License as Third Mate on steam or motor vessels of any gross tonnage. Commissioned with the rank of Ensign in the United States Naval Reserve, Matthews will pursue a career in the Merchant Marine aboard American-flagged ships.

U.S. Navy Admiral James Stavridis, Commander, U.S. Southern Command, delivered the keynote address at the Academy's 72nd commencement. Vice Admiral Joseph Stewart, the Academy Superintendent, presented the class of 2008 with their academic credentials. The parents of the graduate, Tom and Linda Matthews, along with three siblings, were present to witness the event.

Prior to commencement, Midshipman Matthews was presented with a waterfront Achievement Award by the Sailing, Power, and Crew Squadron for his contribution as skipper of the school's 50' motor launch "Storm".

He was also recognized by Command Chaplain Lt. Leslie Sias, USN for leadership in the Christian Fellowship Club. Worn on his white dress uniform during commencement exercises was an Army Achievement Medal for outstanding performance during a summer internship at the National Training Center at Ft. Irwin, California. During his senior year, Matthews' served the Academy as the Regimental Honor Board Vice-Chairman of Investigations.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy is one of the five service academies and is operated by the Maritime Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Matthews received his nomination to the Academy by Senator Wayne Allard.
