Dougco libraries offer homework help for students
Contributed by: Erin Feese/YourHub.com on 8/16/2008

As the school year gets into full swing, Douglas County Libraries has plenty of resources to help students navigate those book reports, research papers and science projects.

The librarians at each library have extensive research experience and can help steer students in the right direction, said Suzanne LaRue, reference librarian at the Phillip S. Miller Library.

"We can help them find the information they need or a book or bibliography that supports the assignment," she said. "Students shouldn't be afraid to ask us for help."

LaRue said it is helpful if a student brings the assignment with them, so the librarian can understand what the teacher wants them to find.

At home, students can log on to the library's Web site, www.douglascountylibraries.org, and have a number of research databases at their fingertips.

The databases range from auto repair to genealogy to poetry and are instantly accessible with a library card, LaRue said.

She said one such database is Theatre in Video, which contains more than 250 performances of the world's leading plays and interviews with playwrights. Students can bookmark specific scenes, monologues and staging to help with play assignments.

There also is live research help service called AskColorado, where students can chat live with a librarian 24/7 through instant messaging.

Another feature is online homework help, which is for instances such as if a student is stuck on a math problem, LaRue said.

"It is staffed by people trained to help guide the kid through the problem," she said.

The free service is available for third through 12th grades in subjects such as English, math, science and social studies. There is a writing lab where students can send their paper into a tutor and receive a response within 24 hours.
