Firefighters help residents during paint-a-thon
Contributed by: Erin Feese/YourHub.com on 9/26/2008

Castle Rock firefighters traded their hoses for paintbrushes during the department's fourth annual paint-a-thon prep day Sept. 27.

"It's a chance to give back to the community and for people to see us in a non-emergency situation," said Art Morales, chief of the Castle Rock Fire and Rescue Department. "It shows we are here for them in other ways as well."

Two Castle Rock houses were selected to receive a fresh coat of paint. The homeowners were chosen based on their inability to physically be able to do the work or financially to pay for it.

The homeowners include a couple struggling with unemployment who need to have their house painted to comply with their HOA, and a single mother, Morales said.

About 40 firefighters and community volunteers pitched in Sept. 27 to do the preparation work necessary to paint the houses and the crew will return on Oct. 4 to finish the job.

Morales said he participated in a community service painting effort when he worked at the fire department in Thornton. After seeing the impact it had on the homeowners, he decided to start a similar program when he came to Castle Rock, he said.

Morales added the program helps home values as well as makes the individual feel better about his or her home.

"Service has its own rewards," he said. "You get to give help where help is needed."
