Castle Rock Rec Center celebrates 20 years
Contributed by: Erin Feese/YourHub.com on 10/12/2008

Patrons who walked into the Castle Rock Recreation Center on Oct. 8 could immediately tell it was a special day: The lobby was filled with colorful balloons, free pizza and cake awaited and staff members sported 20th anniversary T-shirts.

"The daylong event was to celebrate our 20 years and thank our loyal customers for being here all these years," said Eileen Matheson, recreation manager.

The Castle Rock Creation Center, 2301 Woodlands Blvd., was dedicated on Oct. 8, 1988, when the town had a population of about 8,000. Now, the town has more than 44,000 people and the rec center has been expanded twice and is now 84,000 square feet.

Castle Rock resident Cathy Sukta has worked at the center for 18 years, and has loved every minute of it, she said. She started as a front desk employee and is now the night manager.

"I love it. It's a great place to work," Sukta said. "It's a nice feeling to come to work and like your job."

Sukta, who started coming to the center to work out when she moved to Castle Rock, said her ability to make a good cup of coffee landed her the job.

"The lady who was here at the time said, "I like the way you make coffee. Would you like a job here?'" Sukta said with a laugh. "And I've been here ever since."

She said one of the biggest changes since she's been on staff has been the increases in technology.

"We used to do everything by hand, such as ID cards, which we had to laminate and cut out -- it took a lot of time," Sukta said. "Now everything is done on the computer."

George Salvador, 89, and wife Alice, Castle Rock residents for 32 years, have been coming to the rec center since it opened. They currently come to the rec center and adjacent senior center about three times a week.

George Salvador said his wife enjoys the water aerobics classes and he likes the stationary bikes.

"We have a lot of friends here," he added.

Alice Salvador joked, "If he didn't come here, he'd be sitting at home in the recliner watching TV!"
