The election buzz about town
Contributed by: Laura Alfano on 10/1/2006

Fall is in the air!! The aspens are changing colors, homecoming football games are being played and people are talking about elections. All the election chatter made me remember "way back when" when I was 18 years old standing on the corner of 42 nd Street and 5th Avenue in front of the New York Public Library screaming at the top of my lungs, "Register to vote!!Register to vote!!"

I was a freshman at New York University and had just signed up to help with a very important voter registration drive. I was passionate about everything in those days. I don't even remember who was running for what but I know I was driven to make a difference. That unbridled energy made me feel I could change the world and that I knew better than everyone!! I knew so much in fact that a few short months later I talked myself right out of completing college. That's another story.

Here I am a "few" years later and I'm all excited again about the election process and the right to vote and even more about the responsibility to vote. This Saturday, September 30th, dozens of people went door to door across Douglas County to increase awareness about the importance of voting YES to 3A and 3B.

I was honored to be asked to head up the effort in the Soaring Hawk Elementary School area and was absolutely thrilled by the response from other parents when I asked for help. Not all schools have the parent involvement that we are so lucky to have at our school, which is my main motivation for writing this. You can log onto CitizensforDouglasCountySchools.com for all the specifics and I hope that you will.

A YES vote on 3A and 3B is a vote FOR the children of Douglas County and a vote that will help protect your home value. There are lots of issues out there especially in an area like ours with the tremendous growth.

This vote is not about more growth - it is about taking good care of those of us already here. One older gentleman suggested people should be using more birth control because there are too many darn kids here. I smiled and reminded him that they would at least not all be in the school down the block if he would vote. He winked at me and wished me a good day. It is always a good day when you live in Colorado.

Hope to see you on November 7 th!!
